Hi, I'm really interested in starting my bhs stages to be able to coach, I do not have a horse and cannot afford to loan or anything like that I'm just wondering if someone could give me some advice as to how I should go about this?
Perfectly doable - i don't have a horse and got there. In some ways it is an advantage because you are used to riding different horses.
There is a lot of good information on the BHS website, but nothing beats time spent doing the job and working with, being coached by and assessed by qualified people who know what is required. Spend time working in a teaching yard, become comfortable working at industry speeds and talking while you are working.
If you post your area, people here will suggest good places to train/work.
You can train full time or part time, whichever suits you.
Start lessons/training and go from there. You'll need your Stage 1, the new Ride Safe exam, and your Stage 2 ride, care, lunge in order to take the first teaching exam, the 2 teach/old PTT. To become a full Stage 3 Coach in Complete Horsemanship (which is the old AI), you'll need your 3 ride (flat, jump, or both), care, lunge and then the new 3 teach exam. You'll also need your first aid and safeguarding course to book the Stage 2 teach exam, plus your BHS membership.
Once you've got your complete 3, you can register as an APC. There is also centre based option if you're not self employed.
You don't need to train at an exam centre, though it helps; you can instead aim for them while riding at a decent riding school/equestrian centre, and just book your exams for whereever you fancy. You must make sure whoever's teaching you is qualified to the level above, in order to sign you off for the exams. You'll also need to find somewhere that'll give you teaching practice, you cannot go into that exam having never actually taught the lesson briefs.
It's all a bit up in the air given the Covid situation re exams/signing off, but that ^^ is the basic process. I also say having done a number of exams under the new exams pathway, you cannot get away with simply book learnt answers anymore! The 'old BHS way' has gone out the window. I don't have my own horse and am working towards my Stage 4!
