BHS - what would encourage you to join?

I've already stated that I am a member. My experience is obviously very different to yours. I found it worth being a member even when I didn't have a horse.

Just because the centre in question is still approved doesn't mean that the BHS endorse the conduct you mention. It could be the case that the complaint was followed up but there was insuffcient evidence to take action, or that a suitable explaination was provided, or that action was taken which didn't extend to revoking the approved status, or that the approved status has been regained.

I have joined both myself and my daughter this month - my daughter wants to do her stages and I wanted the insurance.

I am astounded at the cost of the stages! I took mine many years ago and was able to take all three together, she has to jump through hoops - I think its going to take about a year and haven't yet added up the cost but I reckon about £2000 to get her AI!! :(

It does cost an awful lot to run the exams. I agree that they are expensive (as well as volunteering I also sit on the other side of the fence as a member and registered instructor. I am currently working on the Senior Equitation and Coaching exam...all £480 of it! However, I suppose if you compare it to my brother whose architecture qualifications are costing him the better part of £10000, it is reasonable!)

One of the beneifts of the exam being broken down into units is that if she does make a mistake in one section, she doesn't have to pay to resit the whole thing.

To become an Approved Centre, it costs the yard a lot of money paid to the BHS - perhaps that's why certain things are overlooked ? That was my impression anyway. And of course the approval visit is scheduled well in advance.

The centre does receive a fairly substantial insurance discount for being approved (this usually outweighs the cost of approval).

Approval visits are scheduled in advance, spot checks may be carried out, ESPECIALLY if there is a concern raised - so those of you who have a concern about a centre, please do raise it with the BHS.
