hello,id just like to ask about the courses at bicton college.iv been considering doing the working pupil/apprentice type courses, say the national diploma in horse management.iv read that you can do the courses working in a yard, and just go in the college once a week or 1 week every few weeks.has anyone done this course before and if so could you tell me how it works!?i really need to know.also does anyone know of any yards in devon that would do this?and also, can you go straight into the course without any qualifications.i think it said you can if you have had some experience on a yard before which i have, but im not sure if thats correct.or do you have to compete level 1 NVQ.and lastly, anyone that has done this, have you found the qualifications help you with work and what did you 'learn' including the riding??any help would be welcome, thanks!

Hello

I dont specifically know about Bicton however it would be worth contacting a couple of the Riding schools in the area off the top of my head Finlake, Oaklands and Oakwood they all have people doing NVQ's that im aware of and maybe able to help or at least give you some advice.

I think if you contact Bicton directly they have a list of places where you can do apprenticeships, as they're one of the bodies that do it, both internally and externally.
As far as I'm aware you have to have basic equine knowledge to do them, so horse care, stable management etc.
In terms of how you learn, I think its on the job training, I think it depends upon the set up as to whether you go into college or not, but I'm not 100% sure of that!
Hope that helps a little! :)

sorry,so do you mean you can do the courses if you have worked in a yard before?without any other qualifications or NVQ.i think thats what it says but i wasnt too sure

Yeah I believe so, as long as you've got experience, I was eligible to go straight into level 2 (although I opted out of doing the NVQ route) and I didn't do a level 1 :)

ok,thats a big help.when you say level 1 and level 2,what are they exactly?national diploma in horse management?sorry for the ignorant questions!but thanks for the help:p
