Saw a recent post about the price of big bale haylage, I am considering moving over to it for next winter - cant cope with soaking hay for 4 horse.

Does anyone knopw roughly how many small haylage bales there would be in a large round or a large square.

I think I remember being told that a large round hay bale was equivalent to about 9 normal bales - I need to do my sums!

I think there is about 10 small bales to a large round bale. But i might be waaayyyyy off!.

we use big bale and there are at least 10 little ones, prob more. one big one lasts us about a week and a half, 3 horses, 2 nets each a day, works out a lot cheaper than buying little ones and have found the quality generally better. only disadvantage is they are very difficult to move, we have to buy 4 at a time to get them delivered, and no good in the summer as it goes off too quick.

I am probably quite local to you and decided to give big bale haylage a go this year. A big round bale weighs approx 300 kg and cost £27.00 delivered. Unfortunately my first (and last bale) was mouldy and I was left with putting it on our muck heap which I pay to get removed. The farmer would not collect it but did offer to replace it, which I didn't want in case I got another mouldy bale. If you manage to get a good supply, please could you pm me as I would be interested!
