Big bitting issues!

i have a very big 18hh warmblood, im trying to get him back into ridden showing hunter classes etc, however usually he is rode in a dutch gag, which he is great for everything in! i have to work quit hard to keep him in an outline and this bit is great! however i need to find a snaffle he is great it as a double bridle is too strong but the current snaffle i have is just a standard eggbutt, he is very heavy on it, its difficult to get him and keep him in an outline in it, and just isnt as respectfull of it, as he is with his gag!

Double bridle, too strong, snaffle not strong enough? i need a bit that i can show in, please help?! :(
 
Maybe try him in a Waterford snaffle? Some heavy, strond horses go very well in these. May be worth a try if you can borrow one. :)
 
Thank you so much! i really didnt know where to start! ill be down the tack shop tomorrow and pick one up! anything has to be an improvement on the current snaffle! cant thank you enough! :D

Maybe try and hire one first, I used a waterford on one of my horses and it didn't make any difference, I use a pelham now (mullan mouth) it is a fab bit, I don't even need to touch the reins, anyway ... you can hire bits at www.horsebitshop.co.uk for a small charge - if that helps :)
 
yeah, i looked at robinsons and they are only £10, so for the hassle ill just pick one up i think, im sure ill buy all other sorts of things while im there!
 
sounds like you need poll pressure if you already ride in a gag ,i would look at a wilkie snaffle with a french link get the one with the large rings not the neater show one they are great bits and will be as near to the action of your gag as any snaffle bit ,dont buy the copy they dont have same action as the original wilkie see fylde saddlery they are quick in sending out their orders ,these are widley used for showing .
 
thanks, we have tired a pelham, again went backwards the whole time, however this was a while ago. i think ill try out the waterford, have a good look at the wilkie and if all else fails another try with the pelham is on the cards!

however thank you all very much! i had no idea where to start with all the bits that are out now! but fingers croseed to a successful seaon showing!
 
Sounds like a job for a Pee Wee bit! I've just got one and find it a great success for hunting, but I don't know anything about showing and the vaious silly rules which hidebound judges have dreamed up!
 
I have a 16.3hh Normandy Cob who when I got him leant and grabbed hold of the snaffle I had him. someone then suggested I try a waterford snaffle. It was like magic, he loves it and so do I.

I also use this bit in working hunter classes. You can get these bits up to 6.5 inches as unless it's the pelham version they're meant to be worn 1/4 - 1/2 inch bigger than a 'normal' bit.

I've got a large Pee Wee bit. Haven't used it yet but after I'd bought it read on hear that lots of people find they have no breaks when riding in one.
 
Seems lots of people don't seem to be able to work out how to fit them. I just recently replaced my standard size with a medium, and notice they are now all labelled as to which ring is connected to headstall etc etc, so you can't go wrong. I do not understand how anyone could say they had no brakes with one, but horses for courses!
