Taking my dog to the vets tom and a maybe coming home without him

He is 16 years old and has Hip Displaysia and over the last few weeks he has been a bit wobbly but still fine and happy. Today he seems to have really stiffened (sp) up

and i think i could be his time. It is so hard because he is so well and happy but his legs just wont work. This morning i was 130% PTS but now im only 90% sure cos he has just shot upstairs

im going to wait till the morning and see what my wonderful vet says i used to work for him and whatever he says i will go along with. Before anyone says why have you not taken him today, he is not showing any signs of pain, he can still get to the toilet eat and drink fine and my vet is not around till tom.

This is Ben my beloved dog thay has always been by my side since some nasty people threw him out of a moving car and he folllowed my bro home.

It sounds to me like he has had a good quality of life up to now - like you say, if he can still eat, drink and go out OK then I dont think you are wrong at all in waiting until tomorrow to take him to see the vet you trust.

I hope that you can have a chat with the vet and come to the right decision for Ben (whatever that might be, not pre-judging things here!)
 
Awww, hugs and vibes for you both.
I lost my GSD at 15 and everyone was amazed she made such an age. Her hips went in the end and she couldn't get up and down the back step.

You have given him a lovely life, and he has obviously repaid you with love. It's so hard to let a good friend go but it's the last kindness you can offer him. His time might not necessarily be right now, but when you have a close bond with a dog you'll know when it comes.

He looks a gorgeous dog. He was a smart cookie to follow your brother home

So sorry to hear about Ben, its a really hard decision to have to make. My friends in the same position, her lurcher sounds the same, he is so happy but his legs are giving up. Shes taking each day as it comes but knows the time is near. Its so hard as a couple of weeks ago she thought it was the time but then he perked up.

Sending you (((hugs))). It sounds as if you have a vet you can trust, and who knows Ben, which is so important in this situation. I am sure he will help you make the right decision for Ben, fingers crossed you have a while longer with him yet.
 
God, it doesn't get any easier does it??

I heartbreakingly had to put one of my cats to sleep (the one in my avatar) at the end of August. She'd been playing with me that very morning, but was terribly unwell with stomach cancer. It broke my heart - but there was a certain relief that she was out of pain and that I no longer had to worry about her.
