Big Dilemma???!!!

Sorry its a long one-

Right a few of you may know i sent my WB mare, Lottie, to stud last year. She should have got in-foal to Goshka Ringo but with no luck. She was inseminated twice, it was AI. They could find nothing wrong with her- normal seasons, scans showed healthy ovaries, no sign of abnormalitys, etc, so they don't know why. I recently found out that her previous owner tried to put her in-foal also with AI and only tried once.

When i collected Lottie from the stud they said i should put her to a stallion using natural covering as they'd had mares that didn't take to AI but when they went to a stallion for natural covering they got in-foal. BTW Lottie is THE biggest flirt...ever! lol.

So i have a few options-

1. Take her to my friends stallion (a palomino Arab, produces fantastic foals) where she can be covered naturally and see what happens, this will be FREE, if she gets in-foal then next year i can fork out for her to go to a WB stallion.

2. I can take her to another friend who owns a large AI centre and also a number of stallions for natural covering. He will also be able to investigate as to why she can't get in-foal. BUT it will cost a lot!


So...... what are your opinions, all appreciated!

I think i would go for 2.I wouldent want to put her in foal just for the sake of seeing her take through natural covering (i'm not saying the Arab wouldent give youy a cracking foal) but if WB is the chioce of stallions you want to sire the young un then i would go for two.

Well i wanted a coloured WB, lol, obviously that didn't work, but in the end i want to have a well bred WB (Lottie is well bred and has competed at quite a high level before i had her) suitable for competition.
BUT i also really really like Show Hacks, which is the sort she'd produce with the Arab. Plus a WB mare had a stunning filly from the Arab last year who is going to make a fantastic Show Hack.
 
Why are you putting her in foal? Is it to sell or keep for yourself.

If it was something that i wanted to keep and a WB was my first choice then i would stick with that option and pay out rather than putting her to something else for the sake of it just coz it was free.

By the time you have paid out for the first foal then that will probably cover the costs of going with option 2
 
What would you do with the foal if she did have one by the arab? See if you weren't keeping it I'd think this was under the headline of breeding for the sake of it and why add another horse to the world that isn't exactly wanted?

Sorry - not meaning to be horrible because if you WANTED an arab cross foal, then I'd say try the freebie first! NOrmally my instinct would be try the natural free one first before costly investigating...

A free to use pally arab eh? Hw big and can mine go with yours as a job lot??? I actually want to use an arab stallion on my mare!
 
Ummm not too sure it depends, lol, probably to keep, but i love WBs and Show Hacks/Show horses anyway.

Not really because for option 1 it won't cost me anything to get her in-foal and because i live on a farm keep is free, hay is free, bedding is free, etc. Obviously registration fees and vet fees aren't but option 2 will be a lot more expensive.
 
did you see the goshka ringo 2 year old that was for sale in H and H about 2 months ago £8,500 had been backed but not gelded.
 
Oh no, i know what you mean it won't be an unwanted horse and i will most probably keep it as a show horse!

He's owned by my best friend, so they just won't let me pay anything. But his stud fee is only £200, i think. Hes won a lot in-hand and has the best temperament. TBH i think most of his offspring are better than him!

Hes on the Palomino website, BTW hes not 100% arab, coz i believe you cannot get a pure bred Palomino?! But he is almost pure bred-

I would put her to another warmblood - the problem is as you say a lot of them do not allow their stallions to naturally cover - esp competition horses,
 
Think i would still wait, i wouldn't breed for the sake of it or because it was free. I would rather pay the money and get something that i want.

I know you like the arab but thats not what you originally wanted.
 
You're right it is a dilemma, but unless you are definitely going to keep the foal by the arab, don't breed for the sake of it being free. Breed something you want there are just to many unwanted horses in the world.
Whatever way you go it has to be right in your heart.

LMAO!!! Thats what she wants thats for sure, shes such a flirt its unbelieveable. She lived next to stallion once and broke down electric fencing and jumped a post and railed fence trying to get to him! lol.

As i've said before though it won't just be a horse for the sake of breeding something, it will be a decent horse and should be a decent show horse (though i know theres no guarantee), but i know all of the Arabs offspring and there hasn't been a bad one. Ahhh decisions, decisions...

I think you're right ForgetMeNot, TBTH im not getting my hopes up that she will even have a foal, so it will probably be a good idea to go for option 1.
 
If it was me, I would definitely go down the Arab route. Not because it's an Arab mind!
I think, all things being equal, you will have a better chance of getting her in foal naturally and many times, once they have had a foal, it's sometimes easier for them to get in foal by AI in future years which is another reason I used Tex on Twiggy for a first time; not a great deal lost if she didn't get in foal although it would have been a heap of disappointment rather than do as you sadly have done and lost another year ( there by the grace of God, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you).
I would be very wary of going down the AI route again without trying natural covering first so the 'economy' chance you have seems a godsend to me.
