Is this ok?

Our 5 year old border collie is now having puppy food for a few reasons

1. Big dog gets fed first - puppy very interested in what she is eating and grabs the odd mouthful when big dog lets her.
2. Big dog very interested in what puppy is eating at steals the odd mouthful when puppy lets her.
3. Its easier for me as big dog will finish any bits puppy has left and vice versa (which is rare)

They are now on the puppy version of what big dog eats.Big dog has had her one meal spit into 2 (morning and night) to fit in with pup.

I would feed them separately for now, or even at different ends of the room without ALLOWING the pup to grab mouthfuls, that kind of thing can lead to fights.

But diet wise, can't see what harm small amounts will do.

My thoughts exactly! Start feeding either at the same time in different areas of the room and keep a strict eye out for any hovering with intent to steal or feed separately, if fed at different times. Mine are all fed together and have their own spot in the kitchen where their bowls are put. I say to them "positions" and they all go to their own place before bowls are put down. One of them is a gannet and always finishes before the others, so is shooed out of the kitchen to allow the rest to finish eating in peace!:)

I really didn't mean to scaremonger but I have seen a mother nailing her own pup for doing the same (we owned them both and the pup sounded like she was being killed :o) so it is best to establish ground rules to be on the safe side with babies, even a warning nip can be a big deal for a pup.

no it's not, sorry. Your pup and your adult dog have different nutritional requirements, the puppy food will prob be too high in protein for the older dog. Really, just don't let them steal from each others bowls:cool: If I were you Id be feeding the pup separately as its a great time for training.
