Video: Britain's Big Freeze To Return For New Year
Temperatures are set to plunge to minus 3C in most of England and Wales on Thursday night, New Year's Eve, and minus 8C in Scotland, with widespread snow showers also predicted.

New Year's Day will also be chilly, with the northern half of Britain struggling to get above freezing during the day.

The forecast follows a spell of snow, sleet and ice which has gripped the UK for more than a week.

Earlier Glasgow Airport suspended operations on the runway for more than an hour to allow for "snow clearing operations" to take place.

And a council in Merseyside revealed that a number of gritting bins had been stolen and advised drivers to delay journeys until later this week following the weather warnings.

Severe weather warnings have been issued for northern England and southern and central Scotland by the Met Office.

Durham northwards up to Strathclyde, central Tayside and Fife in Scotland will be areas affected by icy conditions.

Sky weather presenter Lisa Burke said: "We're going to see a continuation of light snow showers in the north England and southern Scotland first thing on Sunday.

"The Highlands yet again will be bitterly cold and temperatures possibly as low as -10C in place by noon not rising much above 3C.

"Monday will see a beaufitul start but it will be bitterly cold, just above freezing.

"We will see a lot of rain meet that cold air on Tuesday and we might see a return to snowfall."

Friday saw an official white Christmas for some areas of the UK - including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Nottinghamshire - costing bookies who traditionally clean up from one of Britain's favourite annual wagers.

William Hill took a record 27,000 bets on a White Christmas, with nearly 15,000 in London alone.

Aberdeen was favourite to see snow at 4/6, with Edinburgh and Glasgow offered at 10/1.

The past week has seen scores of flight cancellations at UK airports and train disruption due to the cold weather and snow.

Eurostar - which suffered a three day suspension last week - said it was planning to run a "near normal" service over the next 24 hours, including ski services.

Its snowing heavily for three days from the 1st Jan, we've hardly had any snow in Warwickshire.

Oh for goodness sake! I am also fed up to the back teeth of the white stuff! Which has now turned into ice! cannot even turn out as my field is on the opposite side of the road so i have to cross the road which is barely used so is like an ice rink to say the least! I am getting through hay like it's going out of fashion! Arrrgggghhhh!

hear, hear, I am having trouble staying upright, along with my 4x4. There was a bad accident near here yesterday, just wish it would all go away, can't ride in field for ice and no chance of even stepping outside the gate. Horrible!

Hmmm, metheck's forecast for my area isn't going to drop anywhere near freezing

Now everything has defrosted here it's quite bight and mild. I changed my mare into a lighter rug on Christmas day!

The kids will be pleased though, plenty of sledging for them!

I'm fed up too, it has cleared in most places by me but lane and track to farm are dangerous, no chance of hacking or getting trailer out. Wont stand a chance with more snow forecast..

At least horses are turned out 24/7 now though will bring them in at night if it gets bad again.

I was really looking forward to doing lots with the horses over the Xmas holidays

We've got a severe weather warning in place. It's to be around -6 every night this week. Deep joy! I can't remember how to ride!
