Big head = Big hat = mushroom effect. How is this avoided?

To put it bluntly, I have a physically large head (contents are under debate). I currently wear a skull cap with silk but my head looks like a giant mushroom what with all this modern safety padding etc.
I'm never going to not wear a hat, so beaglers or beanies are not an option!!

Which hats can you recommend that are 'slimming'?

I have an officially huge head. It is a mushroom of gigantic proportions before I put anything on it. The only hat I have found slimming is the PROtector skull cap. It is MUCH thinner than the HSI or my Charles Owen (I have the Adventura which is a great hat, but not as slimming as the PRO) and definatley takes a few cms off! Plus it is SNELL tested (so super safe) and it is a really gorgeous quality hat made in Britain. They are definatley my hat of choice and I wouldnt want to be without it :D

Peaked hats I think are definately more flattering. I have a champion evolution hat and it looks much better than a skull hat plus it's vented. I wear it for everything other than XC. Is the comfiest hat I've ever had as well. I've always found for some reason that peaked hats fit my head better. My HS1 I had to add padding in places to make it fit better.

Ooooh loving this thread as I am too an official Mushroom head :D and also a sweaty one at that after wearing a massive thick hat
I will be watching with interest :):)

Size 5 head here :) Ihave a showjumper xp I think its called and its about the most slimming I can find -dont wear it that often as have stupid horses that like to face plant me but also have a charles owen pro racer/racing skull cap which is proper cannon ball style but is very comfy and light so kind of a compromise :)

Size 5, goodness!!

Thank you very much all for your suggestions, a weekend of hat shopping for me coming up (oh what a hardship!!).

Also another mushroom head (which is oh so sexy when combined with my read sweaty face!), I have a ary8 which I really like, a H2000 which looks smart, and a champion kids skull - not the slimest but does the job! The ary8 and the h2000 def look the slimest. Worth trying a load on, Fionas hat is supposed to be slimmer but it just looked awful on me, so depends on how the shape of the hat suits you particularly.

Size 5! I thought my head was big at 4 1/2. I would advise you to avoid the HS1 if you want to avoid the mushroom head look (I have this). I bought it for the safety little realizing that the skull cap increases with head size so it is huge! I have to buy extra large silks covers for it which are ordered in for me.

LOL - I remember trying the HSI on and looking in a mirror and my first thought was "I wonder if I will get stuck in doorways" - It was SO big! I think all skulls are - except my wonderful PROtector which is very slimming.

I to have to buy XL silk covers... :o

another vote for PROtector :D have to admit i only have a size 1.5 but when i bought mine at HOYS friend was looking for new hat in 4.5. she tried just about every hat at the venue  and PROtector was definately most flattering. Not cheap but have top safety standard and although they have peak, its not fixed so can be worn for BE cross country too.

hehe I have made my peace with the largest head in the world :D it does have its uses - one tack shop owner was so determined to find a hat to fit me she said I could have the rest of my shopping for nothing if she was unsuccessful which of course she was - she couldnt beat the might of the mushroom head :D

They do (flattering) skull hats too now. They are my favourite hat makers by a bloomin' huge mile. 1.5? Midget head :p !

I have quite a large head (size 3) and I have a Charles Owen J3 hat, it's not mushroom like at all! ;)

I am exactly the same size, and have the same hat

Gormless photo alert - but I don't think it looks too bad

I also have a Gatehouse Hickstead for competing

I am a 2.5, I've not bought one yet but think the PROtector is the best skull if it fits :) My Ventair is ok but doesn't fit as well as it should

I am the 4.5 sized head that Snowgoose talked about!! :D I love my Ventair from a skull point of view, and the protector is very comfy...and is something I will buy one day when i finally have enough money!! :p Charles Owen hats just don't fit me, and I find very difficult to get big enough anyway! :o

I have a Champion Ventair Jockey Skull Deluxe for my big head. It is comfy and not mushroom-like, but I had to try on many to get the right one. This is the one that is best for me.

Fellow massive head here.

I have a champion junior jockey skull - not flattering but it fits. It was all that fitted when I bought it. Trouble is that Charles Owen and many other brands of hat don't fit the shape of my head. OH also has a size 4 head but I can't get his lovely gorgeous velvet hat on my fat head.......

Next hat I will spend more on as I am riding more now and will be competing soon too hopefully. So I hope that when I increase the budget I will have more choice, and that some of the choices are more flattering. Last time it was a choice of several ugly massive hats so i thought if they are all equally ugly and massive and have the same safety standards then I may as well go for the cheap one.

Oh and XL hat silks???? Since when??? Where do you get these from? I really struggle to find silks and the lycra ones make the mushroon effect worse!

KristmasKatt, I order the silks from my local tack shop. I am not sure if they are made specially, or just not a standard size so take a while, but they do take several weeks to come in. Worth the wait as they almost make the HS1 look normal in my size! Well a big blue or black mushroom at least. Plus they stay on much better which is a bonus when hunting and ducking under trees. I order several at a time knowing that I will loose them from time to time.

Haha this thread made me laugh! Didnt realise how big peoples heads where mine must just be extra extra small!!!

I'm only a size 0 1/2 - 1 lol, that explains alot though!!!
Also i am 20 so not a little child either!!

This is what I currently have, although oddly my old was size 4 but my new one is 3.5 (perhaps my head is shrinking and I soon will have a button mushroom instead of a great big toadstool head!!). I ditto what you say about the fit of some hats, I also found some too shallow and feeling like they perched a bit on my head.

Maybe with my mysterious shrinking head they will be a better fit now....
