Okay, this is a mildly ridiculous question on behalf of my mother!

Our 5 year old 17hh-ish horse has had a growth spurt in the last couple of months, and apparently (according to mum) his head has gotten too big for his body. :rolleyes4:

Now I think he's gorgeous, and am trying to convince him that he's a yellow Valegro. I was wondering if anyone else has had a young horse who's been disproportionate for a bit, and then evened out? Has he even finished growing at rising six? I'm going to go down the shaving chin, building neck muscle and getting a more flattering bridle route for now :)

I have the opposite problem, mine has an absolute pea head for her body and never evened out! Not to say your boys won't, it might you be his 'awkward' teen stage ;)

I always thought my boys head was quite small but hes 3.5 now and it appears to evened out!

maybe your boy had a small her and its evened out and your mum just isn't used to him having the right sized head?

We bought a youngster who was slightly out of proportion in that his legs were on the short side. However he was a warmblood x and we were assured he would grow (he was 2 when we bought him) He is now 11 and is approx 16.2hh, a truly massive and impressive horse.... except he appears to have stolen his legs from a passing shetland! Looks most odd but he is very much loved and we wouldn't change him.

Our big boy had a enormous head when we got him age 5. The rest of his body did not seem to fit at all. Over the last 18 months he has been filling out and growing loads. Now his head fits his body very well, seeing his body is now also enormous :D

My boy is 17hh and 7yrs old he has a relatively small head for his body, it isn't obvious but a full size bridle is too small and he needs to have extra holes punched in. He's TBxShire but his head is all TB!

On the other hand we once had a 13hh pony in, he had the hugest head, he wore a full size head collar and bridle, he wasn't particularly thick set either so looked hilarious, he didn't ever grow into it either.

So however big your lads head is at 17hh he can't look anywhere is silly as the 13hh pony.

That is comforting haha! I don't mind him with a big head, I think it's cute, though my mum prefers show hunter types, and he is definitely of the working variety...

This is the offending photo!! I have to say it looks even bigger in real life :o

Slightly more flattering angle:

We have a horse at our yard who at 5 was all gangly legs and big head with a long body. He's been here for just over a year now and he's looking great, far more in proportion. Your boy is gorgeous, but he'll probably even out even more as he matures! :)

He's lovely, he's very unusual, I don't think his head is out of proportion. I think the fact that his face is slightly paler than his body and the fact he has a slight roman nose makes his head look bigger than it is.

Your boy is stunning, absolutely gorgeous :) His head doesn't really seem out of proportion to his body.

My boy has a big head! He has a ponyhorse body and big head, he is only 15hh but his head is on the large side I think. Actually got him new bridle in full size and had to return then get one that was full size with extra-full noseband lol as was too small!

Hehe yes, he came with a full headcollar which we can't get onto him anymore!

Thanks guys :) I think he's Buckskin?

He's super. Our big ISH gelding has a very slightly large head, and it always looks slightly bigger with his forelock plaited for some reason. He didn't stop growing until he was eight, if that's any help. I think yours looks lovely. My kind of horse.

His head is handsome, it's the neck set and length that gives the appearance of a large head. Sadly you can't stretch his neck or alter where it leaves his wither.

He's lovely ,Fatty has a very large head and one things for sure there's nothing you can do about it.
I agree with AA it's his neck not his head his head is perfect for him.

I think it's just because he's a bit roman nosed. Very nice horse though. One of mine has a giant head he never grew into. He is 18hh but even XF bridles are a squeeze. He's 11 so can't see him growing into his head anytime soon.

I think I've seen you say on other threads that this horse is a Connemara? I have one and had the same thing with him having a big head! I bought him age 5 (nearly 6) and his head was massive, made worse by the fact he'd spent a year or two just hunting in Ireland, no schooling at all and being allowed to go everywhere flat out and upside down. He had a HUGE muscle under his neck (which is taking forever to go, but is slowly reducing), upside down neck and it made his big head look absolutely massive. Initially he looked like his head was longer than his neck. It has taken him a very long time (months) to learn and be physically able to stretch down. He is 7 now and more or less grown into his head! Looking stronger all over, building up topline and bum, and neck is lengthening (because he is stretching it out and working properly more consistently, so he is developing a more correct neck). Now he doesn't look like he has an enormous head with no neck and is more or less in proportion!

I think he has a lovely head.
I have one with an enormous head - a 16.2 IDx Cob who has to have tack specially made - and one with tiny head - a 17hh IDxTBxSec D who wears cob sized head gear - if you just saw his head you would swear he was a 14.2 Anglo Arab!

The big head looks less daft than the little one!
