My horse has injured his knee while hunting on Saturday, probably due to knocking it on a wall. He has a very small cut and it came up in a lump on Sunday, we poulticed it. He went for a steady hack on Tuesday and his whole leg has blown up.

He's off to the vets tomorrow - do you think it is likely to be an infection, just a knock or something more serious??

Only the vet can tell you that, it may be an infection in which case it will be swollen and hot to the touch, it may be a small bone chip which may work it's way out or need removing, or just lots of bruising.
Sorry but this is one of those horrible times when you have to stop guessing and leave it to the experts..

Yea I guess so. I leave things up to my mum to a degree, We were expecting it to go down from a plod round though as you would expect from a small knock.

I thought about a chipped bone too.

I'm just a bit confused because I'm pretty sure he didn't touch any of the walls. Only thing I can think is I jumped a wall which I probably wasn't supposed to be jumping and it had a pylon (small one with the wires holding it up) right on the other side - we were heading strait for the wires and he managed to skip round just in time so I'm thinking he may have caught it on that? Sorry, I'm rambling!

With any swelling or puncture wound near to a joint capsule, I would be phoning the vets straight away. I lost a foal last year with Blackthorn poisoning which got into the joint capsule. The local vet came out and jabbed him, then left me with 3 injections to do myself. The next day, by the time we got him to the nearest equine clinic to flush the joint out - it was too late for poor Magic.
