Big leg - shall I get the vet

Daughter hunted on Saturday and when she got home on checking Manni over she found a cut on his hind leg. She washed it all and sprayed on some gentian violet.

I didn't see him on Sunday and she didn't mention the leg.

On Monday morning I found him with his leg a bit swollen (below the hock). But no heat. He wasn't lame either. I rode him out for a short walk hoping it would walk off. It was less swollen when I got back.

However today, Tues, it is swollen again and has some heat in it. Unfortunately there are no hosing facilities at the moment on the yard. I did trickle water over it from a bucket but appreciate this isn't as good as a 10-15 min hosing.

I will see what it's like in the morning and call the vet - I expect he needs an antibiotic ?

It was less swollen this morning and no heat really. But had vet out anyway and she gave an antibiotic injection - better to knock it on the head I think. He also has some powders to take for 4 days starting tomorrow and vet said to ride him as movement will help get the swelling down. Bless - he's such a good lad - didn't move an inch when the huge needle went in!
