See how I no longer call him Big Fat Marty, so feel free to admire his svelte, athletic frame and I'll eventually do a Before and After when I feel he's reached his target weight. :D

Without further ado, the report: OH and I had a leisurely start with me snoozing on the way there - I could get used to that :D - and on arrival OH made his usual trip to the bacon butty van while I headed off to walk the course. The new site organisation seemed good, especially as we were parked within viewing distance of the showjumping, and the cross-country wasn't overly twisty but, and you knew there was going to be a but:p, I was a bit  as I walked it. I'm sure that it was because Shelford PN seemed like a nice, straightforward track last week, and this was Novice after all, so was going to have questions. I should also add that I woke up with the most godawful feeling of impending doom, not like me at all and I can only blame the drugs as I'm usually Mrs Positive. Everything looked big: fence 4 was over a big ditch, 7 was a coffin, 10 a double of yellow corners with trees in the middle to take you off your line, 13 was the water, 15 a hedge drop to a skinny on a curve, 17 another water - I wasn't just being a drama queen, but I feel vaguely rusty at Novice level...pathetic really, when I was doing two star this time last year. :(

Anyhoo, I dragged my nervous self back to the trailer to get Big Marty ready for stressage. I'd changed his bit from a NS verbinden to a nathe fulmer, and whilst he warmed up ok he was even more on his forehand than usual. I'd hoped that him being more settled in his mouth in the nathe would help me ride him more uphill but nope, he was more rideable but less responsive if that makes sense. Here's the evidence:

At the end of the day, I was happy with how he and I "communicated" but not happy with the quality of the test, so I thought 37.6 was about right. The comments on the sheet were spot on too: more engagement needed for lightness of forehand etc.

In my negative, doom-filled frame of mind I stood and watched some showjumping in the hope that I'd see a clear round amongst all the carnage. Thankfully Rosiefan's Rosie obliged with Frodo:D, so I tried to put the other ten disastrous rounds I'd seen to the back of my mind. The showjumping was running late and we all stood around watching the air ambulance take off (more reasons for me be mulling over giving up eventing and taking up knitting :p). I'd put Marty in Moo Cow's nathe gag which had worked well at home, and was working well warming up, or it was until the last two oxers I did, where he set sail (ears in my mouth, I could see the whites of his eyes...you get my drift ). I went for my "less is more" mantra, jumped a teeny upright and got ready to go in. The time was tight and I'd seen several people get time penalties, so I tried to get the big canter and shave a few corners where I could:

I got a bit excited from the double to the oxer - there's forward and there's forward-borderline-tempting-flatness  - but we got away with it. Ditto to the final combination but in my defence m'lud, there wasn't really another stride there and it had been riding long, so as long as I sat up when I landed I thought I'd be ok. A big woohoo for the clear round and a very smiley Baydale. :D

There was no great rush as they were running about an hour late cross country so I went to walk the double of corners again, then the coffin, then the 4th fence (ditch). I gave myself a stiff talking to, slapped myself around the face a couple of times and decided I was going to have to ride positively, removing any earlier thoughts of it being ok to be a round where one stop was good going (I know, I know, but I really was feeling that negative. :o) One final boot up the @r$e and we were off, Marty resisting my efforts to over-ride the ditch at 4 and not even registering it was there. The sheep feeder to skinny at 5 and 6 went well, and was followed by the coffin at 7:

I made myself ride everything properly, so that was my coffin canter - bouncier would have been better but too much with Marty results in ears-in-mouth moments, so I went for the middle ground. ;)

That was followed by the timber wagon, then the double of corners (felt perfect :D) then a log:

Then the ditch/palisade, to water (slightly angled log, log in, skinny-ish log out) - apologies if this makes you queasy:

Then the drop hedge to the skinny on a curving five strides, followed by a chair (which OH managed to miss ) and the second water:

And the final fence....there's a very cute photo of Marty over this with his knees under his chin and his ears forward that I may have to buy: :)

So, that was that, I needn't have got myself in such a state as he felt the best he has done for a long, long time and I was over the moon at him getting his first point, how cool is that? :D I knew I'd gone steady and was thinking I'd have 16 or 18 time, so was very pleasantly surprised to find I'd only :p got 8.4, and was even more pleasantly surprised to find I was 8th! I'd been over the moon thinking I'd got a point for my double clear but to get one by getting placed was even better. Ah, happy Baydale, that's what we like. ;)

There's the remains of A N Other Sauv Blanc (the non-Oyster-Bay variety) and Ma Baydale's chocolate crispie cake if you've made it this far.

i dunno about wine, i need some sea sickness tablets from those last few vids! I thought men were meant to be good with technology!

Great result though - that course looks seriously beefy compared to some Novices!

Am liking the streamline-ness, he needs to give a certain cheeky pony some advice ;) And wooohooooo for the 8th and shiny points :D

Woop! Go Kermit and Marty - looking very streamlined and pro-like and a frilly too! Crispy cakes sound fab, I'll pass on the white I'm on some sparkling rose but I'll willingly share and raise a glass to a perfect point! :D

Hope Jup is on the mend and back in action soon!

I'd put money on the fact that my OH is trying to get himself sacked as camerman.

Thanks, there was enough to do but nothing horrendous (says she, glibly, now she's got round and is in one piece :p).

Thanks, teapot, but Marty's advice would be to cheat the diet and sneak food whenever you can: out hacking is a good time, as is when your rider's back is turned for a millisecond and you're within sniffing distance of the haylage bale.

So you're not up for joining me in Extreeeeem Knitting then now you've got this Eventing lark sussed then?

Well done Smarty, sounds like he's really regaining his confidence. :)

And will you please stop handing out Ma Baydale's Crispy Cake as there will be none left by the time I get to you tomorrow. :p

Well done on the placing, and the mental kicking - nothing worse than the feeling of impending doom, it really is horrible.

Have said it before and I will say it again, I do love Marty, and yes he deffo does look to be shrinking in the girth department :D

Can't see vids (pah, work :() but I'm assuming OH no longer needs the wide angle lense? Go Smarty :D. Top work, it seemed to be the Weekend Of Strong Novice Tracks, so all points collected and prizes won are extra-speshul - nice one Kermit :D

Well he made that look easy didn't he? :D

What made you change from the Verbindend for the dressage? Just interested really as I think they are brilliant and do really help the lightness in front without any sensitive mouth hysterics :p the ordinary angled tranz lozenge in the thin version might suit him?

Oh - and before you think you have got away with it - I know what you are doing with those queasy video shots, thinking if you make everyone feel sick then they won't want Mummy B's cake so you can scoff the lot? Well you are wrong there lady - I'm never too sick for cake EVER - so pass it over ;)

Glad Frodo's clear SJ made you feel a bit more positive, only too happy to help :D. Very well done on placing plus point - you've been and gone and turned Slimline Marty into the DC king! Might see you at MK if all goes to plan.

Thanks, C, and yes, Jup is definitely feeling better and back to his usual cheeky self.

He looks great, streamlined definately (I'm sending Pig to your fat camp), relaxed certainly. I see what you mean about the dressage but it looked much better to me. Lovely SJ round, well done on the clear as they were certainly hard to come by. Great that he was so good over the XC, he's a big grown up boy now :)

Sorry you were feeling down, hope you are back to your usual whirl of positivity very soon. Congrats on the point and the frilly!

Nx

Isn't Marty clever?! The XC all looks very easy for him, despite him apparently doing it on a ship, really nice (though had to not watch the last one as felt a bit ill!).

Big congrats on the DC, I reckon you deserve to keep the vino & cake all to yourself (and def none for the other half as judging by those last vids he already had a head start on the wine :D) Your reports do always make me chuckle :) No mean feat over those jumping courses on sat either so a double pat on the back!

Think I was parked behind you actually as def caught a glimpse of the Kermit green and the svelt like Marty but alas, by the time I had dragged myself to do battle with I115 I was too late to say Hi....either that or you knew I was heading back and made a swift getaway :p

So after your brain-training game that was remembering the eventers GP course at Houghton here you appear to have a show-jumping course that only involves cantering to the right?! One left turn that I saw! Looking good anyway ;).

Can I just say that I am SO JEALOUS of the size of your SJ arenas in the UK at ODE's here for some reason the DR warm-up and arenas tend to be set in an aprox 50ha field and the SJing (warm-up and ring) crammed into an area margianlly larger than your average loose box...

Well done on the point and placing :) and over coming your impending doom. Can you not ask the Dr's for the equivalent to the Felix Felicis potion in HPotter?

Does 8th get a pretty coloured ribbon? cause that the important bit right... ;)

Regarding the XC vids -ARGH mine eyes! Was your OH cantering round on a horse himself??? However shouldn't complain my groom refuses to film  The green & brown blur looked awesome and very neat in all the videos and the log after the corners  was it really that big!?

PS What has Jup done? I hope its not serious.

Poor Marty is fading away- there'll be nothing left of him soon! We were vaguely discussing Lt. Downham being a first Novice for Reg next year... Having watched that and read your description, I think that the entry (if it's made) will be mysteriously lost somewhere! Well done on the 8th and the shiny points.

He surely could swap at the Teachers Pet points he's collected for an extra meal or something- like a reward scheme? I'm sure I can remember my primary school teachers running points thing and if you got 10, you got to pick a treat from the special box (although they were pencil sharpeners and pencils and rubbers...) :D

Everyone. Needs. To. Step. Away. From. Marty.

:D

Good stuff. He does make the corners look easy. :)

But what WAS your OH doing???? I couldn't quite believe he'd agreed to chauffeur AND record for posterity, so I'd agree, it's all part of a nefarious plan to never be asked to do it again! ;)

Big well done on the DC and 8th. I hate the "impending doom" feeling too, though to be fair as I tended to get it most times when I was competing I just thought that was how you were supposed to feel. Marty certainly didn't seem to be worried and looked to be eating it up (so to speak!). Love the streamlining - he'll be getting go-faster stripes painted on soon.

On a diet at the moment so I'll pass on the wine and cake just to prove to myself that I can resist temptation.

Fab result, Well Done :D

Showjumping round looked lovely especially if it was causing carnage.

Couldn't really watch the XC, a bit to much sea sickness for me!!!!!!! :D
