Big ouch, a first I'd rather not experience.

Just had my first fall on the road. Fell off plenty of times, but always managed to bite the dust, not tarmac.

It hurts! A lot! I am bleeding through my joddies with a nice thigh graze, and my arm hurts: don't think its broken, but its friggin' painful to bend/lift. Hit hat on pavement, so need a new one but not concussed (touch wood!) but on my own as nobody else at home, so on here to vent!

I just can't believe what just happened. All well and on the last 50 yards of our hack, but came face to face with our feed merchant's van, complete with flapping plastic bags of haylage piled up on its back. Going the speed limit I think (40mph) maybe a bit less, but didn't slow down as soon as he saw us. I raised my hand indicating them to stop, but they didn't appear to even slow down. Normally traffic-proof Frankie saw it and spun, I ended up on the floor, tried to keep reins but couldn't hold him, and Frankie went the other way up the road

Idiot feed van driver called out of his window "Are you ok love?" To which I think I took about 1/6th of a second to contemplate if it was the stupidest thing I could ever hear in the circumstances, and I think I noticed how much my arm hurt and wasn't sure if I could get up, and replied "catch my horse!" - but in such a whisper that I don't think the even tarmac could have heard me!

So I got up and followed Frank, THANK GOD the driver coming the other way got the right idea about my hand signal and stopped, and even more thanks bless him followed my instructions and catght an unresisting Frankie.

Who - thank god some more - appears conpletely unhurt and unfazed.

To give him his due van driver and his mate did get out and try to help catch Frank, and says he slowed down when he saw my hand signal but I can't say I noticed them slowing down.

Of all things to have caused an accident, why does it have to be my feed merchant?!
mad.gif
I just wish I'd have pulled into a driveway (didn't because barking rottie other side of hedge) instead, and that the driver had recognised that my signal meant stop, and mostly that I'd have taken another road home.

Arm still hurts, but I have got full movement. Please say I don't have to go to A&E?!

Sweet tea to those who got this far!

If you can move your arm its probably not broken, but if you hit your head you should be careful if you have any symptoms such as sickness, sleepiness etc. Will there be someone home with you later who can keep an eye on you? In the meantime if you have any arnica get it down you . Hope you feel a bit better soon.

Oh my goodness, what a horrid incident. Sounds like you are the one that needs all the sweet tea - and a brandy to boot. Glad to hear horse is ok and you aren't too badly injured. Put your feet up, have a nice hot bath and take it easy for the rest of the day.

What a silly driver, being a feed merchant he should really be more aware.... Words fail me!

Oh God! at least your both okay

Its horrible isnt it having a fall on the road

Am sitting here after an unfortunate accident on sat morning where my horse used me as a human bridge!
The things we put oyrselves through!
Hope your arm feels better soon ((HUGS)))

Ouch, thats sounds damn sore and nasty. Hope you feel better soon. I'd keep an eye on the arm and see how it feels, if its really sore then obviously go to A&E.

I've also fallen on the road so understand how horrid it is! A horse bolted with me when I was younger, straight up the field and out of an open gate, as soon as his hooves hit the tarmac we crashed down and slid down the road sideways. That horse was on loan to me, it was at that point mum returned him to the owner! Hate to think what would have happened had there been a car coming...

Ouch!! Bag of peas for the arm if you have got full movement?
With regards to your head concussion doesn't always appear straight away (little brother used to get it regularly cos he had a thin skull

) so try and stay awake, if you go for a nap get someone to check on you.
Lots of sweet tea and biscuits

Oh my goodness. Horrible incident. Thank god you are all OK.

I'm in pain today too. My 17.2 exploded on Saturday, felt like he grew to about 20hh and bronked me off. Ripped a hole right through my £70 jodhs and knickers! Have a grazed black and blue bum, arm hurts, thigh hurts, neck hurts.... Ouweeee.

If you start to feel dizzy or sick go to the hospital!! x

Ouch! Please look after yourself and if you feel sick or headachy at all go straight to a & e, as already advised frozen peas for the arm and brandy to numb it all, what a horrible accident but glad it wasnt worse as it could have been, take it easy for a few days x

Agree with the others.....hot bath, sweet tea and the MOMENT you feel sick or dizzy go straight to the hospital.

Plus remember......arnica is your friend. Feel better x

Ouch.............
If you have a nice warm bath, and see how you feel tomorrow, if arm still sore, visit hospital, Gareth fell off friday at pony club, his bum and shoulder still stiff and sore, and that was on sand arena!!!
Do take care, glad you and horse are just sore and not another stastistic of car V horse accidents.

Just don't drive yourself there!?!

Hope you feel a bit better soon

That sounds horrific! Poor you! ((gentle hugs))

What an idiot, i can see how it happened though as i've had a few near misses the last couple of weeks. It's things like that i agree with suing the a*ses off them! should know better and pass very slowly, anything over 20 is far too fast for a big vehicle to pass a horse at close range.

Have a big hot choccy, a nice hot bath and some pain killers, and a nice long sleep. Hope you're not too achy tomorrow. x

lol I'm not driving to a&e! Neighbours have just got home so have put the hot water on and given me access to their bath

I'm also not going to sue them, but I will be writing a letter to the owners of the business suggesting that they train all the staff who drive vehicles for them as to the correct way to respond to horse riders on the road, with particular reference to what hand signals mean.

You should also report the incident to the police, as should the driver. If you should prove to have more/worse injuries that at first apparent, the driver's insurance company may have to become involved. The BHS also request that anyone involved in a RTA with a horse complete a questionnaire.
Hope you feel better tomorrow.

Thanks Pearlsasinger, I was wondering if it should be logged as an accident with the police, so will do.
