Ok, so my lad is a 17.3hh WB, has a long back and a long neck. I had the vet confirm he was indeed equine and not a giraffe, but nope he's definitely equine!!

I've tried Weatherbeta, rubbed his mane away! Fal-Pro shoulder room was a bit iffy. Tried Rambo - OMG how small are they? He literally couldnt move in it!!

Just had to take a Premier Equine rug off him as was rubbing his mane away and rubbing his shoulders and the elastic neck cover was always stuck halfway down so it was pointless having a neck cover!!

So which makes are actually designed for a big horse?

HELP!!!!!!

what type of rug are you trying? full neck or detatchable neck?

I personally love the weatherbeeta landa original NOT the freestyle... I know some people find mane rubbing a problem with the detatchable neck ones and not the full neck versions..

I find the masta's heavy for hoiking all that way up in the air. J is 18.1 but not particularly chunky, I tend to only buy him weatherbeeta's now, although his PE fits well too.

Neither the weatherbeetas or PEs rub - could you get away without a neck and try a shoulder guard maybe?

His weatherbeta was a combo, his Rambo was high neck, his Fal-Pro is a zip on neck cover! And his PE is a detachable neck!!

He is a total mud junky, and I dont have the time or energy to de -mud every day for riding. He goes out am and gets ridden in the afternoons and usually has a roll when he sees me drive into yard, so a neck cover is a must as I also have him fully clipped!!

After my last horse and my current horse being hippos- i have to say the weatherbeeta origional are the way forward ( not the awful freestyle) they fit much better than any others, rambo are teeeeennnnyyy!!! mark todd didint come down past their shoulders and any others were very tight on the shoulder. I have a detachable neck cover as for some reason there is more room

good luck xx

I find that all rugs with a full neck will rub their mane out, don't know why but it happens whether they are big or small. For the more elephant like horses i love Mark Todd rugs, my girl has a MT HW combo, and i have a friend whose 17.3 WB also had one and it fitted him nicely. I like weatherbeeta rugs as well, i've always found they fit nicely, i had a Rhino HW which i sold rather quickly, it was far too small and i haven't quite got the £££ for Fal rugs!

You could try Swish equestrian as suggested above. I bought by 16.2 I.D a heavy weight rug in their sale (6'9) and it was really nice but he has quite a short neck and the neck was too long for him. I sold it to someone else at the yard who has a 17h horse who is quite long with a long neck! It fits her very well. They have shoulder gussets so are nice and roomy. :)

Forgot to mention I need a really robust, rufty tufty rug as he is a rug wrecker! He bites his own rugs and annoys my other horses who bite him in a "Feff off... and DO one" kinda way!!

I have 2 Mark Todd stable rugs, one is 7ft, and I have it on my horse who normally wears 6'6" and it's not a great fit on her!! Her Bum sticks out and it barely covers her belly!! I'm not prepared to buy a turnout when they cant get their indoor rugs sorted!!

Neck covers nearly always seems to rub some mane away.

At the moment mine are in Rambo Duos and so far, amazingly, they are still in full ownership of their manes. I do find with Rambo that I have to buy a size larger than normal.

I also like Weatherbeeta rugs (have one who in a 7'3" Orican high neck) and Bucas. Bucas also do a big neck rug.

My 15.2 petite horsey loses mane to full neck rugs no matter what make, the only one she was ever able to wear without it rubbing away was with a separate clip attached masta neck cover in a size larger than she needed!!! So gave lots of room, others on here have said it's to do with grease build up on the silky mane protection cover bit, if you wipe it clean every day and use mane detangler on the mane 'apparently' this can prevent it happening.

With regard to rugs, I agree that rambo and fal are tight around the shoulder (pity because the older ones aren't!!) I have a cob who wears shires and they fit him well, we also have a giraffe at our yard who generally wears either weatherbeeta's or shires and they fit well. I didn't used to rate shires, but I do think they have upped their game with their rugs now and they seem to compare to weatherbeeta. The necks seem to offer slightly more room than the weatherbeeta's IMO. I know Masta don't have a good reputation nowadays, (mainly I think due to their zing range!) but another livery has a combo check-tech, it has a trivent shoulder gusset so offers lots of room around the shoulder. She's very pleased with it, although I would say the neck looks a little on the narrower side, so possibly look at the standard neck with separate neck cover? Also mark todd (and JHL, same design) seem to be pretty good rugs, but not sure of fit on a giraffe!!

I have a Weetherbeeta landa for my 18.1hh elephant and it fits great.
Avoid Masta, they come up like mini skirts!

I avoid weatherbetta for my 17'3 clydesdale all weatherbetta look like a bikini on him. I have gone for the Masta extra deep ones and the fit fine but granted he is need 7'6 rugs which are hard to get hold off but my shire who is 17'2 is in masta rugs as well and I have never had a problem with them at all they are quite deep but try www.thebighorseshop.co.uk they may be able to help you out aswell but remember to measure the depth of your rug or you will end up with a bikini :)

just on the comment of rambos being a bit tight...I have found that the
v-neck front has massively decreased my lad rubbing his shoulders as he has more flexibility in his shoulder movements, though I think due to this, you have to take into account the individual horse regards sizing....in straight front closure rugs, he could go a size smaller.
and on subject of rubbing, the only rug I have had that has never rubbed is the Rambo Plus as there is no seam at neck, all one piece, excellent rug. this coming from the owner of a horse who's REINS rub either side of his NECK!!!!!!!
if anyone is stuck for big fitting rugs, a couple of friends have found the new Horseware Amigo XL rug great for deeper/wider fitting and it goes up to 7'6'.
any of you guys tried these??
