Friend and I are both suffering injuries, friend her ankle, broken but on the mend, and me with my plantia fascitous. Getting off is very painful!! We have narrow steps which are perfect for getting on but unfortunately a but dangerous to get off on. At my last yard we had a big wooden 3 step block which was great for mounting and discounting on, they are quite expensive. Any home made ideas would be gratefully appreciated before I have to spend my money!! Thank you!

mm. They never make them high enough for me to get of either as I seem to be getting shorter by the year!!

We used to get a load of old milk crates and attach them together. But I doubt you can get milk crates anymore (showing my age much!)

Maybe ask a local joiner to make one for you? Or find something similar to a milk crates to stack?

found this but expensive?

I inherited a massive mounting block when we bought our place. It is made of breeze block and runs alongside the side of the school. It is about 2'9" wide and is 5 step with each step up being the height of the breeze block. It is concreted on the top of the step with rough bits in it so you don't slip. It is high enough for me to step onto my 17:3 !

I built one out of old pallets and off cuts of rubber matting. It’s heavy so not really moveable but that’s a cheap idea! Just cost me the paint
Same. I don't like to mount with my foot in the stirrup and pull their back so i use a slightly higher and just hop a leg over. I'm useless at making stuff but it wasn't that hard and Its still going strong (ish, It has a slight wobble) but I made it In the first lockdown.

I made one by putting breeze blocks on a redundant bit of concrete near yard gate.
I popped a message out on local village Facebook group asking if anyone had any unused breeze blocks. Within 2 days I'd collected up 12 from 5 different houses.
It was a decent height once created, I made it stepped and if I stood on the top, I could sling my leg over 17hh if needed.

Beautiful but out of budget. It's what I'm ideally looking for though, thank you.

Regarding old milk crates, I've heard that they are not good because if they break, your leg is going to be most unhappy. (Sounds ghastly, doesn't it? And quite imaginable.)

A friend of mine used 2 milk crates tied together and something startled her horse and he put his leg through it, made a real mess of his leg and it took a very long time to heal so not a good idea to use them

Every yard should have one imo, would save a lot of horses and riders backs, and saddle trees. And that's without catering for older and less sturdy riders who struggle to dismount to the ground.

Milk crates would have to be firmly attached to each other and with a plywood or similar top to each surface to be anywhere near safe. Not recommended.

Current yard has a picnic table that is used as a mounting block, (and occasionally picnics)

Its a great height, nice and wide and stable and easy enough to step up onto.

Its one of those wooden tables with a built in bench each side.

Me too. It isnt 'seems'. One does get shorter in old age. NHS measure old people so it is official.
I need a higher mounting block so recommendations welcome.
A higher version of the very safe 3 step plastic block at our yard costs about £1,000
