Yipee, I've finally found something that's effective against flies!! So far he's had the odd one on him but I was a bit cautious using it so next time will use the whole 500ml on him and wipe it on rather than spray.

For those that use it, do you do every 14 days or more often??

do read the instructions-it is mighty powerful stuff.

i have used it successfully for
lice

my SI pony (who wears a snuggyhood) for when we are riding

heel mites

and killed a wasps nest.

Yes its brill stuff, really cheap too, I started using it after I it was recommended by my vet for a fungal infection my horse caught off some sheep. Its a really good fly repellant and seams to dispatch lots of other nasties too (Including feather mites).

I tend to reapply it every 2 or 3 days. My boy has it applied with a spray, but the non sprayable livery has his put on with an old flannel dipped in a bucket of the solution.

If you pop 10mls of citronella in it as well, its almost the same as the coopers fly repellent - and if you drench them in it - you should (unless they are very bad!) be able to only do it once a fortnight or so....

Wonderful stuff - if you can get a 500 ml bottle of it (so you basically get 5 litres of made up liquid!(or it also comes in litre tins if there are a few of you sharing) its even cheaper

I use it to de louse goats, dogs, etc and once every 3mnths against sweetitch for the donkeys, also as a fly repellant

I have been very happily using Deosect for ten years now. It may appear expensive, but as it is so diluted and applied rarely, it really is the most cost effective fly spray you can buy (and, as mentioned, treats those ppesky lice too). Besides - it really works!:D

It is not pricey at all, because you use a very small amount in a spray bottle full of water, so one bottle will last you for a blooming lifetime. It is fantastic stuff, It cleared up ben's leg mites a treat, they get a fortnightly dose of it for the flies, there are sooooooo many flies where we are! They also have naff citronella spray but thats because I like the smell, there is something very horsey about the smell of a citronella fly repellant!

Deosect is a deity that should be worshipped in my opinion, it solved the mites, mine are fly free on a dairy farm and I even used it on my whippet when frontline had completely stopped working, over the course of a week she rubbed herself so raw with the heat and the bites (she does not have mange, its just this thing she gets sometimes like excema) which was aggravated by fleas anyway, what with the sodding frontline not working she started to get bitten and I declared war on them with deosect as my army, 3 days later not one bit of her skin was red, I could have cried for her, I was so relieved!

Believe me, even though it looks expensive when you work out how much it actually costs to make a 1L spray bottle of the stuff you will see that it is pence, regardless of this I would pay any amount of money for the job it does!

In a nutshell... Another vote for Deosect

yes, little tin about 6 inches tall and costs just over £20 but you have to dilute it and it lasts for ages.
like i said /\/\ /\ powerful stuff.

Patch test your horse before treating them with it as they may react badly. But no more than with most other chemicals.

As long as you dont knock the tin over (!) it is VERY cost effective compared with fly spray (most of which just seem to attract flies!). You dilute it so much, you only need a little capful to do a whole horse. We apply it fortnightly.

We first used it about a decade ago as big horse has ear plaques caused by allergy to blackfly bites and is plagued and targetted by flies as some horses just are. The chief equine vet at Royal Vet College recommended us to use it on him. So it is appropriate to use for horses. By the time we moved house 5 years later most of the livery yard were using it!

Do use gloves tho, when applying it. Sponge gives better results than spray bottle and also better for horses who dont like sprays.

good stuff, i use it every other day ish depending on the weather. as other have said seem expensive but as you dilute it it does last for ages and is the cheeper than fly spary but it does smell horrid!

We use it too but I think we must have super bugs in our area as nothing seems to keep them away.
It is however very cost effective and lasts ages. Please be careful when spraying it in enclosed places as Im told it isn not good for humans to breathe in. I either spray outside or hold my breath!

Its great stuff, but you must follow the dilution instructions to the letter. We've had two horses over the years who had severe reactions to it - one had breathing problems requiring a vet emergency call out and one had severe skin irritation to it - throwing himself on the ground like he was covered in acid - and had to be immediately rinsed and rinsed with the hose. It does, however, work extremely well on the others.
