Biggest rip off?

So I was driving along listening to radio 4 last night and there was a programme about retail and online retail with interesting stats... Manufacturers expect only 40% of their stock to sell at full price, and 20 to 30% to go at 'deep discount' (i.e. less than cost price). So I am going to use that as a good reason NEVER to buy at full price... they don't expect you to.

Biggest rip off is when we have (some) workmen in to do work on the house, they see horses and stables, and add a 0 to the price!

EG. Radiator (in 1999) fitted to convenient pipework £350
5 security lights £2,500
Patch up rendering £10,000 (yep TEN THOUSAND POUNDS for a 4 bed det, with reasonable rendering, just needs tidying up). In fact 2 companies quoted us this price, and when we said no thanks they both immediately reduced the quote by a quarter, and when we still said no they said they would reduce further. Plus, it was for cheap spray on stuff.

We paid..... Radiator £100, lights £300 (did include a lot of shielded cabling around the arena), rendering £4,500 in best, thickest trowel on stuff, and the cheaper spray on stuff would have been £3,000 for smooth or £3,750 for textured spray.

It is not just horse stuff where if you say "horse" the price goes up!!!

Anything to do with horses.....if it has horse or equine in the name it is a silly price. Also anything to do with vets, it's all priced for insurance now so it's all fixed! I try and buy all my gear in shops not to do with horses!!!

Ps........why not rescue a cross bred dog rather then buy?

Workmen: a carpenter wanted £1300 for hanging six doors and putting on skirting in one room and a foot long windowsill. He also managed to muller all the screws on the doors so they now won't come out so I've had to paint round them rather than take them off. Not pleased.

I think back men are such a rip off when they state they have changed the horses pelvis, no! And derby house rugs, they never last for the price IMO.

Hunter wellingtons. Or are they only supposed to be fashion footwear for the annual trip to a music festival which are then left behind with the rest of the camping gear ?

I have a Derby House rug that is 7 years old and on it's second horse-it cost me £16 in a sale. Its a 100g 600D and while no good in heavy, persistent rain, its a well fitting rug thats great in showers/autumn spring. Mind you, I had a fleece from them which was hopeless. maybe I just got lucky :D my only bugbear with it is that it was pink and brown, after 2 reproofings its now pink and burgundy-and now on a bay, bleurgh.

Feed bins in tack shops....seriously I'm not paying £20 for one when I can go to Pound Stretcher and get two for £15.99 and they are the twice the size big black ones.

The cost of shoeing now its outrageous

Errr....perhaps you'd like to study the anatomy of the foot, learn how to trim, learn how to form metal, risk getting a bloody good kicking, work in such a position that you are likely to knack your back, fit out a van, pay for diesel......you get the picture.

And no I'm not a farrier and really really try not to make negative posts - but I think the good ones are amazingly skilled and offer brilliant value.

Cross bred dogs being given ridiculous names and charging a fortune :( they are MONGRELS.

There is nothing wrong with a good old Mongrel.

Me too. My heavyweight turnouts are DH and they're still going strong at six years, I love them.

this is actually incorrect. A dog with parents of known, but different, breeds is a 'cross-breed'. A mongrel is a dog with unknown parentage.

I have decided that chaff is generally a rip-off. I have fed it for years until a couple of years ago when I questioned why I bothered. Most of the different types are just generally straw with some molasses and vitamins chucked on. I can get a pure vit & min supplement for the same price which has a far higher spec. I know forage is high on a horses basic diet list but my horses all have grass and hay at all times (which most horses have) so I don't really see the point in feeding a handful or two of chaff... Don't get me wrong I see the point if perhaps you have an ill or old horse who is struggling with regular hay / haylage and finds chaff easier to chew but then it would be fed in much higher quantities.
