As Billy the 4yo has been such a good boy since arriving from his breeder in Ireland almost 3 weeks ago we thought that it would be good education for him to have a BIG adventure and go to a PC rally yesterday at a local large, affiliated show centre.

Off we headed mid morning for his big adventure. Tacked up on the lorry and took him off to put on boots and hoof oil. He found it so scarey that he....dozed off..! Into the indoor he went, legged him up amidst ponies and biz and he ignored the lot and proceeded to work sweetly in a low key flatwork lesson.

I was a bit taken aback as he did not react in any way to his new surroundings - you kind of expect a youngster who has not worked away from home to at least have a few whinny's or a shoogle or two! Billy stood stock still whilst waiting his turn and the instructor spoke to the small group as can be seen in this photo - though he does look as though he has laid a blue cone in the process!!

Back onto the lorry he went for another sleep and then in the afternoon he had a very short and gentle jump lesson. I'd like to report exciting goings on such as snorting, spooking or a carry on but he just worked away quietly around the jumps like an old grade a.

Whe his turn came to jump he popped quietly through the trotting poles and to a placing pole to a small fence happily. Fence two (against my judgement I have to say) had two hexagonal blue water trays under it and he did think they needed a good sniff. I'm sure back at home in Ireland the other horses when they heard where he was going had told him about the Loch Ness Monster but after a snurfle in them he decided the monster had gone awol and they deserved a complete lack of interest and over he went. He then jumped around all of the other fillers first time, through a little double, related distance, and dog leg of actual 3-D cube fillers to the green ones in the photo.

The thing he found most interesting in the course of the day was discovering that round minty things with holes in the middle come out of mum's pocket when he is good!

The entire day went without incident and I am now giving serious though as to whether someone in Ireland has shrunk his teeth to baby ones, doctored his passport and he's actually 104 rather than 4yo! :)

It's actually way cheaper than hiring the school and son is being coerced into his B test this year so we have to show willing. Saffy really isn't rally material (she scares the spectators!) so he does tend to want to take his others along. [Insert toothy grinning icon that I don't know how to do!]

Absolutely gorgeous :) :) Although I'd be one who predicts that the time will come when he feels strong/confident/cheeky enough to "express himself" a little more - I'm sure you won't be lulled into a false sense of security :D :D

Oh had forgotten it would be your half term!
If A finds he has too many to ride Billy can always come to me for a holiday to give my B some competition!!
That 104/4 sounds so like my B was!! Then every so often they do something that reminds you they are still a baby - so cute!:D

DHB - A has exams coming up and so *should* be studying and not riding but somehow I'm not holding my breath.. Keep an eye out for a large parcelforce delivery!

Vetwrap - next outing is some PC dressage at the weekend and on the horizon some baby BS and other outings for experience, but mainly lots of hacking and chilling as can't lose sight of the fact he is only young.

Excellent! Will leave a note for parcelforce as to which stable to pop him in should I happen to be out :D

And yes you must stress to A how important his exams are :p;)

aw he looks super sweet measles - look forward to meeting him soon :D

p.s - if thats the toothy smilie i just done its : D without the space!

He is just a gem, isn't he? I'd like one like that please. :D

I'm another one that's had the "let me get my feet under the table before I show you what I'm really like" Irish horse scenario but Billy hardly looks like he's the highly-strung type. ;)

Clearly he came from the same place as Mally! As I'm sure really she's a worn out old nag :D

Billy is just gorgeous, that kind of attitude alone is worth a fortune, but he looks like he's got to ability to go with it!

Aww you know I love Billy, if I send up my grey can we do a swap - Piggy has been cheeky all winter and is now distinctly in R's bad books as Lord C's behaviour has been so exemplary! :D

What a clever boy! And so well behaved too! He's gorgeous too - it's weird that that's exactly what Bruce looked like when we first had him (shape and colour wise) and were taking him out jumping.... xoxo

Is that Bruce in your signature? Handsome boy! What age is he in those photos - am interested to know how long it took for the steel grey to lighten. We have a rising 10yo mare who is still dapple steel grey but with a much lighter head and she is not showing signs of her main coat colour changing so far.. :)

Yep it's Bruce in the Sig. He's 14 currently. He started to lose the iron grey at about 9/10 I think (noticeably).....he has gone really pale really quickly! Prepare yourself to have a horse covered in stains EVERY SINGLE DAY. Grrrrr!! xoxo

I am really loving Billy, slightly concerned that he could be a 'Benjamin Button' though, ;-)) I have a 15 yr old Irish boy and he seems to get younger and loopier as he gets older....
Seriously though,he is lovely, congratulations on your amazing 'find' and good luck with him,he could be a 'good 'un' ;-))

nikkimariet - I think white greys are stunning but I just couldn't contemplate the work involved in keeping them spotless for shows! I'm having a mini crisis just thinking about it! Hopefully Billy will have found a super new home well before that becomes an issue :)

Louisem - now, that is a thought!

Country chic - son will be at yours in, say, an hour to pick up the mare? He loves them feisty! :D
