Hey all,
So I get my horse back from full loan this weekend.
He has been away for about 8-9 months and the loaner has had him on biotin plus hoof supplement since January(her farriers recommendation). She has told me he has lost his back shoes around 4 times since she's had him and that his back hoofs are "crumbling" now. It's now at the point where the farrier has taken his back shoes off. She is also having him shod every 4 weeks due to rapid hoof growth.

In the 3 years I've owned him his feet haven't "crumbled", they have got a bit dry which hoof oil has normally solved and he never lost a shoe or threw off a shoe. I also had his feet done every 6 weeks.
Could this be due to the biotin plus hoof supplement or possibly because of the fields he in?
Just curious as to what this is a result of and whether to carry on with the supplement or not.
Thanks! ?

Biotin can be manufactured by the horse and it is a tiny part of what is needed for healthy hooves.

If you want healthy hooves you need low sugar feed, micronised linseed and a good supplement like progressive earth pro-balance or pro-hoof, forage plus or Equimins advance complete.

I'd take the shoes off and let him grow out the crumbly hoof while treating any thrush or white line disease too.

Thank you, when I get him back my farrier will be coming out to check how feet, as he hasnt had a problem before.
I think you're right about taking off his shoes for a while to let them rest and regrow!
When I get him back he will be on low sugar feeds, what supplement would you recommend?
Thanks

I listed about four suitable supplements in my post.

I do think the support of a good trimmer rather than a farrier might help you. They can provide lots of help and advice on diet, minerals and hoof boots.
