Hi all

Just looking for a bit of advice :)

Tommy, baby cob ( 4 yrs old) doesn't have any braking issues as yet. We do have some slight steering issues when having lessons and I've been advised that a slight bit change may help.

At the moment he's ridden in my other cobs loose rink French link snaffle which is a 5 1/2 inch however on one occasion after a longer ride there was a tiny amount of chaffing in the corner of his lips.

What bits would people suggest? I've been looking at full cheek / fulmer French links but I'm unsure of the difference and which might be better. Also, should I try a slightly bigger size?

many thanks
Nichola

Fulmer with leather keepers are fab , otherwise loose ring with lozenge. I like the French links as they do not crack like a snaffle but again you will need some keepers.
Would try Fulmer first

With my new boy who is also 4 & has a lovely soft mouth, he had full cheek french link when I tried him and then got him home and tried (what I had in the tack room) a hanging cheek French link and a loose ring french link. Neither suited him & were slightly too big so bought a NS starter bit which fits him well and seems to work although we are less than 2 weeks in.

A good excercise to help a youngster with steering is to set up a line of electric fence posts or cones in an arena or wherever you train and walk in and out of them, it is fun and helps you both focus on the aids. if you get good you can try trot.

As for chaffing on the corners of the mouth, it is advisable to use bit rubbers.

Try using a nathe bit to start with there seems to be a good selection here.

they also seem to have an advice service.
