Bit advice for fussie Connie needed....

I was going to suggest a myler, but from the bomber bit rejection I guess that won't work.

My mare got a belt in the head when she was a youngster according to my dentist and has two misaligned teeth. One pointing in to her tongue which is quite fat and one pointing out to the side of her cheek. Because of their angle and the gap between them, they get quite sharp and full of food.

She likes the myler as it was thin and gave her tongue more room.

Interesting to see about the saddle too! Wow!

I'm still happy to act on bit suggestions though.

Road trip up to Old Mill...Hoping Dad will mind F for me, or it will be a bit of a boring day for him. A PC friend went to him quite recently and was there for hours....

I'm now depressing myself looking at all the new saddles on their website that I can't afford.

Fingers crossed he has something in second hand that will fit .....

I've not been myself but know quite a few people that have travelled there to get their horses fitted..

That sounds super, except that the girl I spoke to who took the booking said they didn't need pics in advance. I wonder should I ring back next week when the fitter is back from his hols and check this...

@Fiona I'm a regular up there with Robert lol
He doesn't really need to see anything in advance, and he has by FAR the best selection of saddles in this country
Be very clear in your own mind about what your budget is (!) and as long as you tell him, he will stick to it- I never look convinced about my own budget and talk myself into anything, but that is not his fault. He also wafted the possibility of a years interest free credit at me one time (!).

He has an arena for you to ride in your shortlist of saddles, which is really useful. The last time I was there, all in it was about 2.5hrs. Add on the 1hr 20 to get there and the same home and its a full day out - but a great one!!
If you end up with a new saddle, he will refit it once it has settled.

Good luck with the saddle. If it's not one thing eh?!

Re bits- following with interest as my ISH is usually in a NS turtle top after much investigation into bombers etc etc. The NSTT is by far the best of the various metal bits I tried but I have recently tried him in a cheap rubber snaffle and he's much more forward into my hand and a lot less fussy. I want to "upgrade" him to a sense, nathe or beris but the price puts me off as he's going to chomp through it and I want to look at it before buying and they are hard to come by. The nice lady in my tack store actually said to stick with cheap and cheerful rubber snaffle if he's ok it in (as I stood with a £60+ sense bit in my hand!). We're going to see how we go. I'm scared he'll bite through it but we did jumping and he was fine and responded so well to half halts etc. At least for £10-£15 I can change them as needed and he really isn't bothered about how thick it is. It's very soft and gentle but he responds as well if not better than in a metal one. That said, we've not tried anything super exciting yet!!

The soft.

Haven't had a nathe, just borrowed one to see if he'd like it. It seems hardy enough so far, he's able to est without any damage to it, but he's not really a bit chomper so probably not the best gauge for it.
If you were closer (or if you'll be in the Dublin/Kildare area any time soon) I could meet you so you could have a look.

Take a selection of the pics we looked at today, and those videos, even if they don't want them in advance :)
 
My connie is really fussy in his mouth - I've found the best bit for him up to now is the Myler eggbutt snaffle with a triple barrel mouth piece... he likes thin bit and seems to really get on well with this one!

I'm guessing he didn't like the bomber bit because it was too thin, so probably myler will be the same 😭

Good point, but I'm hoping to find out that beris or Trust are more durable than nathe, and therefore worth the investment...

My ISH is fussy in her mouth, I had her in a NS Turtle Top and she HATES it (violently running back, spinning, bouncing) Tried a Mullen mouth and she was instantly 100% better. Trialed the NS a few months later and got the same extreme reaction (teeth etc all up to date). The straighter, and stiller the bit then better she is. I also played with the bit height - turns out she likes it one hole higher than you'd traditionally fit a bit. She's not strong, and when she's working properly the contact is very sweet, so I think if she wants it higher and more secure then it makes no difference.

She can still be a bit fussy and does toss her head from time to time, but that is through excitement or lack of positive riding - once my leg is on and she's working through it almost disappears.

It shows Ireland on the Europe map, and mentions Northern Ireland and Ireland in the news section. I’d definitely give them a call!
