Bit advice for horse who draws the tongue back

I ride Will in a NS Verbindend. Its worked well for him for a year or so now, but he's constantly chewing on the bit and moving his tongue backwards and forwards underneath it. He has a fleshy tongue etc which is why I chose it - previously he was in a KK ultra which he tended to try and lean on. I want him to be absolutely spot on comfortable and just feel that he's not as comfortable as he could be. All the necessary checks have been made of saddle, teeth, back etc. Any suggestions for something more suitable? Thanks in advance :)
 
for dr, kk correction bit (ported mullen). i have a 6" one if you want to try, too big for most horses though!
and/or i'd try a sprenger lozenge full cheek with drop noseband, or a hippus 510 with cavesson or drop.
 
Mine does this - but has developed into putting her tounge over the bit. Shes always drawn it back when upset, but flips it over the bit now whenever shes bored.

I ride her in a NS Tranz lozenge baucher, with a drop noseband which seems to do the job.
 
My horse does the same and I have tried probably every bit going :(. Ive had him 8 yrs and am yet still to find a 'cure'. He does it the minute he is bridled, so it isnt just a contact issue. Ive tried Mylers, Sprengers (KK ultra, correction etc etc) various NS, french link, Hippus copy, nathe, the list goes on. Ive tried different nosebands, I dont know what else to try. It really affects our riding, he is spooky as he switches off, like a baby sucking his thumb/dummy and we never truely have a proper contact. I would love to find a solution to his habit.

Thanks everyone. I'd tried putting him in back in his kk ultra, but he thought that was great and was like a tank in canter! He does go very nicely, but its not 'quite' there. Does that make sense? Funnily enough, the more harder the work, (loads of transitions and lateral) the less he does it. I'll look into the bits you mention.

Kerilli, thank you for the offer. I may take you up on that. His NS verbindend is a 6" due to the shape. Its supposed to allow room for the tongue, but his tongue is so wide it probably still doesn't fit within the gap!
 
I had this problem and eventually settled on a myler high port snaffle, not the correctional, the one that gives the tongue more room.

His tongue was uncomfortable so he was drawing it back to escape the pressure; he is really settled in his mouth now, no flash or anything.
