Hi everyone, hope some of you can help me!

I own a 16.2hh, sports horse mare. She is 7 years old and I bought her in July last year. Previously she lived in Ireland where she had been show jumped and hunted by a male rider. She was a bit poor when I got her last year, she was ridden in an eggbutt snaffle when I went to try her however as she got fitter and healthier I had to change her from a Sprenger KK ultra loose ring snaffle to a Neue Schule baucher. The Neue schule baucher is great for hacking on her own or for flatwork. However I require something a little more for jumping for a bit of extra control!

She is a quirky horse and spends a lot of time bucking and broncing! She had a very poor neck when I got her and had always been ridden like a camel! She is starting to soften now and work in a more correct outline, working through her back. She goes from one extreme to the other quite quickly. She can either be very bouncy and can come very short and back at you especially when she starts bucking! Or she can be very forward and start pulling. I often find that when I jump her she starts off quite short and back at you, but progresses to the very forward pulling you phase.

I found a picture of her being Hunted in Ireland in a rope noseband, but this is something I wish to avoid. She has very fine skin and I have found a normal noseband to rub her before now! I always use a sheepskin noseband cover to provide protection from rubs. She's ridden in a flash, just to ensure she can't open her mouth and take hold of the bit when she decides to buck and bronc!

I really don't want to over bit her in anything really strong! Need something that will encourage her to work forward and for her to soften but then has extra breaks for a bit of extra control when required. Rider is myself, a 5ft 8, 8stone, 19 year old, female rider just requiring that bit extra control.

If anybody can help offer any bitting advice then it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

hi... you sound a lot more experienced than me so nervous about offering advice ....but have you tried a pelham? Some horses will soften their jaw nicely for a pelham and if you ride with 2 reins you can use the curb rein sparingly. My last mare went beautifully in a rubber pelham with 2 reins.

I wonder when you're jumping and she flattens and start pulling is because she's starting to tire, it's a lot easier to go flat and pull then bounce. Do you rest her enough when you're schooling? Also when she starts pulling make sure you're not pulling back, keep the energy down the reins, pull and release etc. Don't give her something to lean on.

In the mean time a snaffle with rollers will make it more difficult for her to take the bit if that fails a Waterford snaffle in the right hands is not very severe and very difficult to take a hold in.
