I seem to be having a bit of an ongoing search for the right bit for Shy. He is 4 1/2 years old, and he was started in a Happy Mouth, but very quickly chewed that, presumably thru teething  He has a thick tongue, and seems to prefer thinner bits (the mullen mouth rubber I got, he tried to spit out like a dummy, lol ). He has his teeth done every six months.

He really seems to object atm to having metal in his mouth, constantly chomping and trying to evade any contact by putting his head down. The only metal bit he has settled with is a copper roller, but isn't that a bit harsh ? So recently I have tried a rubber eggbutt, but he's just chewed right through that, and dare I say it, a bitless bridle, but we won't talk about that

Today I tried him in his hanging cheek french link (he used to hold his head with his nose sticking out), but that was a certain no. Even with hardly any contact at all (or none), he was chomping down on it. Have tried a fulmer snaffle, an eggbutt single jointed and I just don't like loose rings (previous bad experience).

Is it okay to just use the copper roller d ring, or is this not good ? I have been looking on ebay for a copper based smoother bit, but I do need advice tbh.

Thanks so much :)

have you tried sealtex latex bit wrap around any bits . my 12.2 i used to own had a thing about metal bits but didt like happy mouths so we tried this and what a difference. worth a try think its about £ 4 from most tack shops :)

right onto the KK bits and bit wrap. I am very gentle with the bridle, so I wonder if the copper roller is the one to stay with too.

I get soooooo confused by all these bits !

my 4 yr old is in a Neue sheule starter bit, bit like a KK but different metal but similar pricinciple and bit cheaper. she goes well in it and likes it. We are now changing to a full cheek one to help with steering. She is a sensitive mare too.

Has he got all 4 wolf teeth. (should have by now) unless any were blind. In which case he could be uncomfortable in his mouth.

If this carries on you could also try bitless to go with your treeless !

if hes gobby or chewy dont get a kk seriously although they are 'soft' and solve lots of them the rest of them chew huge dents in them dont be fooled r whole yard invested and most developed shap edges and chew marks i have a myler comfort loose ring with sweet iron inserts its really thin and every horse i try it with loves it worth every penny

Call me a bit snob ;) but I always use KK's. Have a read and see what you think?

This
After rebitting my boy when he came to me as he was v unhappy with a bit in his mouth, I went to happy mouths with peanuts that did the job at the time but when he chewed through the third one I decided it was time for a grown up bit! I went for the kk ultra after trialling one first and he loves it. This was years back and he still has his kk for everything, I wouldnt put a stainless bit near him and obviously through the years of having the kk over umpteen happy mouth replacements at 30 odd quid a pop, its actually proved to be a good economical choice despite the initial outlay!
