I love my new boy, Sidney, but he does seem to be trying to lean a bit when working. At the moment he is in quite a thick single jointed eggbutt snaffle. I have no problems with brakes, it's just that I'm finding it quite hard to get him going properly. I REALLY don't like single jointed bits, and my instructor has suggested trying some alternatives, so I was wondering what you all thought?

Instructor has suggested a slightly thinner loose ring French Link. I personally would prefer a lozenge to a French Link, or would like to try a Myler wide barrelled comfort snaffle, as a couple of other dressage horses I have ridden go nicely in those. Sidney is a ShirexTB, on the chunky side, so I imagine that he has quite a large tongue in proportion to his mouth size. I can probably find a French Link to borrow, and could try some others from a bit bank. Any thoughts? These all have to be dressage legal, BTW.

Thanks!

Isabelle

I personally would first start with a lozenge bit before going towards a waterford etc

get the same cheeck pieces as you have at the moment - horses general do not like single jointed bits and one of the wys to evade is to lean.
