I have a strong 16.3hh eventer. I have ridden in a Dr Bristol for the last 3 seasons and for XC it's ok. But I went to a SJ today on grass and I had 2 poles down. Both were because he ran through the bridle. Eg at planks I asked him to sit and wait and he just fecked off and took a stride out. A couple of people watching today agreed that I need more brakes.

He tends not to like too much poll pressure.

Any suggestions?

ermmm not sure about strength compared to a Dr Bristol but maybe a pelham? if you didnt want 2 reins maybe try it with a D link? Or a dutch gag? Kimblewick maybe? although not sure on their strength comparatively I am afraid.......

sorry not much decisive help, just suggestions...

you could try a waterford if he is leaning and running. no poll pressure, and works like magic on certain horses. just remember you need a bit bigger than usual size because of all the links, they come up smallish.

Humm..thanks. I sometimes ride him in a Waterford at home and if works really well. But I tried it in the SJ of an Intermediate Novice class last year and he ran straight through it. I thought about a Waterforg Dutch gag but again that's poll pressure.

Someone said a Cherry roller? Is this stronger than a Dr Bristol? As I said he's fine XC it's just SJ when I need a quick reaction from him, I just get ignored! I suppose he takes after my husband

Guess OH's of any species have that response hey?! hehe

A horse I ride at uni has a cherry roller in, its so she doesn't take hold of the bit and ignore or run through it. It MAY work.... but sometimes she still manages to get around it (irritating btw!)

Although the dutch gag has poll pressure it does give you good brakes....... so maybe even putting it on a weaker ring might be enough?

Have you written on the bit lenders forum so you could try one or two before making your mind up?
