Hi,
I have a loose ring snaffle for my mare at the moment which she usually goes in fine. But went for a hack yesterday, had a canter and she broke into gallop. Found it really hard to stop her!!! She just puts her neck down and goes!
Went to tack shop and they recommended a Waterford. What are people's experiences with them? I really don't want to use something harsh - have mixed reviews from friends about how harsh they are. Usually she is fine it's just when she gets excited she's off - it scares me a bit as I'm not that strong!!
Cheers!!!

Hiya, it is scary when they do that isn't it?!
If she is leaning forward and down into the contact in order to tank off with you it may be worth considering a flash noseband (if you don't use one already) rather than a waterford in the first instance, as it might be that she opens her mouth in order to escape the contact and so a waterford wouldn't help.
A waterford, as with pretty much any equine apparatus, is only as harsh as the person using it and so you should be fine- they are designed to overcome the problem of horses leaning on the bit by not having anything they can 'fix' on to. It may also be worth considering something with a curb if you need to get her head up, perhaps a pelham, a kimbewick or a NS Universal with leather curb?

i have used a waterford found it good i personally dont think they are as dangerous to use as people think they are as my mare still pulled and tanked off, i now got her working in a double bridle so i have snaffle for normal but when she thinks of getting excited and silly i gently use the wheymouth and for a year and a half touch wood i have had no problems
