Ok well when I was at camp, Lacey got her tongue over the bit. Since then I've been checking to see if she has but she hasn't done it again.
However whenever I look, she has like this bulge of her tongue behind the bit.
Look (I'm not putting any pressure on the reins)

Any ideas? Why is this happening? Should I try a different mouthpeice?

I don't want to put on a flash/drop/grakle or anything as she has a curb though I'm not sure if she does this in her snaffle...

maybe a ported bit? her tongue looks like its too big to fit. You can get proted kimblewicks also. Or maybe one with a thinner mouthpiece so it takes up less room in her mouth.

I would say this bit is totally the wrong shape/type of bit for this horse...

how tight is the curb chain???

Looks very similar to my horses mouth! spent ages trying to find a bit he liked, in the end gave bitless a try and so far so good. Not saying every horse goes well bitless but might be something else to consider. He has a nurtural bridle.

It is ported..

Curb chain is..normal tight? Fairly tight but not hard to do up if that works.

I'm having real problems to find a bit which I have control and she likes - (fairness to me I tried schooling her for 18 months before going down the stronger bit route >.< so I didn't just jump to a stronger bit) and she got on with the kimblewick and now this!

I was going to put my snaffle in later and see if she does it then, and if not buy a jointed kimblewick?

Bitless sounds a bit scary but it'd be worth a try if she still does this with her snaffle.

Thanks

I thought it wasn't meant to be tight at all

it has to be able to move enough for it to come into action when they bit is at the correct angle doesn't it?

Tight wouldn't be a word I would associate with a curb chain. Maybe I've been taught wrong.

Well I dunno, I can't say I've ever been taught how to fit a curb chain except being corrected for it being too loose. I can fit my finger between it and the curb, and only when I pull the reins after that I can feel pressure from the curb.

:S I could have done it wrong, I dunno I had it loose before but got told it was too loose.

I'll try putting it up, thanks

How ported is the bit? It looks like a simple mullen mouth? Although mild in terms of sharp, poking parts, they can be horribly uncomfortable for the horse, as your piccies show. That must drive her insane, being unable to get away from that pressure.

As for the curb - it should be done up so there is no pressure at all on it, but no slack either. It should not be 'tight' at all. She needs be able to move the bit about in her mouth easily.

I spent ages ,and loads of money, trying to find a bit Kalli liked. Tried all the mild mouthpieces (she's not strong at all ) and eventually came up with a curved single jointed snaffle (JP korsteel), which she's perfectly happy in.

A jointed curb bit totally changes the action of the bit and makes them into a severe Tomthumb (of the western reining, not the cheeck peice type). But a non-slotted jointed kimblewick with a fairly loose curb is basically a hanging cheek snaffle and worth a try.
