I am a huge fan of Pelhams for horses that are very strong, you really don't need to put any pressure on them, horses just repect them and the fight and pulling are gone (IMO!)

A waterford snaffle? They can't grab hold of them as easily, and no poll action (I'm not a big fan of bits with a poll action, because most of the horses I've ridden that have them tend to stick their heads right down and tank).

Also, do you ride in a martingale? My sisters horse had one, and we discovered that she was actually leaning on it and using it to fight my sister. She was miles better without it.
