Hi we have just acquired a tbx as a bit of a project - he has been passed around a bit but so far so good - he seems ok @ the mo but tends to try & rush a bit - apparently previous owners wanted to put him in a Pelham - we are using a loose ring snaffle which he is doing ok with but the rider is a bit worried about hacking him out as he does try & run off at times - we think he has had his mouth messed with in the past so don't want a harsh bit in there - teeth have been checked & ok - he also tends to throw his head up in the air at times so has a martingale on - we are going to carry on schooling him but he also gets bored so could do with going out - but we also need to be safe any advice appreciated

Hiya, you could go back to basics and walk him out in hand? Just so then he gets youst to the idea of not trying to run off and hack out in company?

If hes okay in the loose ring snaffle in the school then I would keep him in it , it could be that he needs more ground and ridden work to bring him on abit? Maybe vary the work in the school so he doesnt get bored, lots of transitions to get him thinking and listening to your aids i.e. leg yielding, pole work, go in and out of barrels and cones to make it interesting.

Also it takes time for new horses to settle down in new surroundings with a new routine etc so just take it slowly and I'm sure you'll get there with him.:)

Try hacking him out with an older sensible horses as a lead?
Schooling can be pretty boring so he's likely to play up if thats all he's doing, start with a small ride (20 mins) just walking and then go from there.
