Bit advice?

Hi, I am thinking of changing my horses bit but am unsure what to try. I have had him for 3 months and he is currently in an eggbutt snaffle. However he holds his head high in trot and gets excited and forward when jumping and wants to go flat out when cantering out hacking more so in company which he can then be hard to pull up. He is only just 5 so still has more learning to do as do I and will obviously be excitable. He has been excellent for me in every other way and I don't want to ruin his mouth by putting something too harsh in him and especially as I appreciate we have to get to know each other and I need to improve. I have been suggested a hanging cheek (French link I can borrow from a friend to try) and also a tom thumb but on reading about these im not sure I would be happy with the tom thumb, any advice please? thanks

I had a Hanging cheek french link in my mare and I was told it was too harsh by Lucinda Green :| Personally I thought she went very nicely in it!
