I have a very excitable 16.3 NZ TB (ex racer), who I happily ride in a loose ring snaffle for schooling, but I am needing another bit for jumping and hacking as he is very strong. When approaching jumps he charges at the jump with his head in the the air - this makes life difficult as when the jumps get bigger he needs to be put on a stride and i'm finding it impossible to see a stride with him pratting around. At home I use canter poles and lots of circles which helps, but at competitions I obviously can't do this! Also, after the jump he will put his head down and lean on me to go faster! He is a big strong horse, but at the same time extremely sensitive. Any ideas / comments would be much appreciated!!

If it was me, I would try a few different bits. I'd firstly try a waterford hanging cheek snaffle as this would help with the leaning and give a little poll pressure. If this was no good I would try a dutch gag with roundings and if still no use then try a pelham. Ask at your yard if anybody as bits to try so you don't have to splash out loads of cash. Does he open his mouth or cross his jaw at all?

Hi, thanks for your reply! My friend mentioned the waterford - sounds like a good place to start! Yes he is very fussy in his mouth and constantly chomps away!

do not use a dutch gag they are designed to raise the head for horses that put there heads down

i would se a pelham the best bit i have every used on strong tb who charge at fences.

The op says that the horse puts his head down after the jump and leans to go faster. That's why I said I would consider trying this bit.
