Hi, does anyone know how eggbutt bit rings are constructed - as in, perhaps, has seen the process or taken one apart?
I have one I bought as unused second hand last summer, no make etc., and it seizes up! This winter/spring horse was out of action and the rings seized so solid I questioned whether it had ever moved. Used wd40 and a lot of elbow grease and it got going again, but a load of rusty wd40-goo came out. Day by day the sides stop moving freely. Bend it back and forth a while, and it loosens.
So yes, I am going to replace forthwith, but I don't want an expensive version (would be worth more than the horse) and don't want another poorly made accident-in-the-making, hence wanting to understand construction before acting. Many thanks!

Can't help on the construction but a reputable brand needn't cost the earth, especially for a standard eggbut. I would say you could trust something by Shires and that's likely to only be about £20-£25.

Yup, exactly my thinking, but was curious to see whether anyone had deconstructed one (I might yet!)
