apart from the obvious shaking/sweating where do i feel to see if shes the right temp - shes a tb and has a hw with neck over a lw at night and a stable under a mw turnout during the day(shes not out in real horrible weather - yo policy) but have noticed that some horses have at least 3 rugs on in the yard. Do i feel behind the ear or girth area, how warm should it feel?

Thanks!!!

well, i feel the body under the rug, and then the brisket area. i don't go on ear temp, ears can be cold and wet from rain (as today) while body is still toasty. i just dry the ears off with a towel, but i don't put more rugs on if their body's nice and warm.

If you are checking ears it needs to be the base of the ears right at the bottom that you feel and check under the rugs to make sure that is at a reasonable temperature - warm without feelng you could cook eggs in there! Don't be dictated on what others are doing...three rugs sounds a bit over the top to me!

I dont go by ears either as mine live out so they can be covered in mud!

I just feel under their rug round their tum and quarters. If they're toasty then they're fine IMO. Ignore the fact that other people have how ever many rugs on, you know your horse. Modern rugs are so much more effective nowadays I cant understand why people still chuck on so many rugs especially if they're all decent weights already!

I tend to slip a hand under the rug at the front on the chest and then have a feel at the loins. I was always told that the loin area was the most important to keep warm.
We also have a feel of the ears but I personally find that it’s sometimes difficult to tell from touching the ears.

I stick my hand up her jumper as I call it. I put my hand up the back of her rug and check her back and flanks then round to the front and check her tummy and shoulders. I don't take any notice of what others have on either, she wears what she wears and thats that.
