My 3yr Haflinger gelding has been backed and done light hacking and a little schooling. I find more problems when out hacking, he gets his tongue over the bit, just started broncing, and he salivates so much it annoys him so he has to stop & wipe it off. Generally he is great, very placid and willing, I have started him with a French Link Snaffle but had to fit a flash to stop him opening his mouth. He is strong and often I have a dead feeling down the rein which I guess is when he gets his tongue over, bit scary when it happens the same time he mucks about.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Hi - welcome to the forum.

Check the size of the bit and the height you have it fitted - if both are correct then I'd suggest that you change back to a single jointed bit.

My TB wore his French Link for a total of 45mins before getting his tongue over the bit and going into panic mode.

If your horse has a fleshy mouth go for a thinner bit - I love the sweet iron bits that are slightly curved - the horses seem to like them.

My own youngsters I always break in a Fulmer and drop noseband - I use the keepers on the Fulmer.

Fit the drop so that it is two fingers above the false nostril and allows two fingers to fit inbetween the back strap and the jaw.

Thanks for your quick reply. I will give that a try, someone did mention using a drop noseband but I dismissed it, I thought the flash would do the same thing but thinking about it, it will probably be kinder. I used to use Fulmars with my ponies so its definately worth a go :)
He had the dentist out today and had his teeth rasped so hopefully that will help too.
