Hi
Can anyone recommend a bit for my cob x arab- I dont think he likes his french link hanging cheek snaffle anymore- he throws his head around, crunches on it etc. teeth etc are ok. do you think he would he be happier in a straight bar bit of some kind?

If he hasn't had his teeth floated in the last 6 months, he could be uncomfortable in the mouth.

As horses grow and age the conformation of the mouth changes. So, a bit might no longer suit. Some horses will not tolerate a nutcracker type snaffle, some a French link, others bars... so the only way of knowing is to try a few different types... suck it and see! Every horse is an individual.

Mouthing the bit is good... to a point, the horse softens its jaw and listens to the contact. Some horses have a habbit of muching on the bit.... just for fun.

Do check that your bridle hasn't stretched and got bigger/been put togeter incorrectly/horses head grown & bridle is pinching round ears/ bit worn out and become sharp and pinchy etc, etc. All this could mean that the the bit is sitting too high or too low in the mouth.

remember arabs and warmbloods tend to be thick through the jaw and the tongue, it may be that he would be happier with a thinner bit. He might not have enough room for a chunky bit.

Hi I had the same problem with my cob, she was in a dutch gag when I first got her, long story but started rearing and I had literally no brakes, she hated the nut cracker action. Had exactly the same advise, there was just no room for that type of action in her mouth, with a big tounge theres not a lot of room. So put her in a kimblewick with kurb chain and never looked back. She is in a verbindend snaffle for schooling and the kimblewick for hacking. Hope this helps.

My cob hates double jointed bits, he throws his head in a french link.
He is either in a plain snaffle (on a very good day)
A 3 ring gag (average day)
Sam Marsh pelham to show in and ride out in company with.

The cob I ride runs backwards in french link bits

He is in a loose ring snaffle however I am going to try him on a straight bar because as someone has already said, most cob type horses have big tongues and just don't have enough room for a chunkier bit!

my cob clanked her french link hanging cheek.. now got a sweet iron loose ring with copper lozenge which she LOVES def recommend them
