Bit for a ridiculously strong horse?

My friend has had her horse or about a year now. He is full tb, and when schooled is very responsive. She has recently started him hunting, and he doesnt buck/rear, and stands still when not moving, but when everyone goes for a gallop he will streak the front and is impossible to stop. She has now tried him in a snaffle, french link hanging cheek (to try the softer routes) dutch gag, pelham, scourier/cornish snaffle and even an american gag. None of these have made any difference. Any suggestions?!

did he used race? as the harder you pull the fast they go!!!
My horse can do this i use chelteham gag, but also you do to have to NOT give them something to lean on or pull against. But it does take a bit of guts if you know horse is going to pee....... off............ but you do need to soften contact and given then nothing to pull against, but it does sound as tho, it's a combination of different bit and rein contact needs to be found
 
Cheltenham gag? Mine was very similar to your friend's horse, and its better to let them stay up front, nothing pisses a lively horse off than being kept at the back of the hunting field, she needs to make sure he always has a clear view ahead. Mine chilled out as I bottomed him, hunting full days twice a week soon dopes them, if they only go a couplf of times a year they are going to be a little bit racey. I've tried mine in everything, I think with very very strong horses pelhams arn't good as they lean on the straight bar, and american&dutch gags are far too restricting as they are not true gags. The Cheltenham has such a good effect on my hoss.
 
Have tried the lot on my stupid strong WBx. Pelham for jumping but she's lovely and light when schooling in a snaffle. NO chance of stopping hunting so I ... um... stopped hunting.

Far from ideal but since I don't have the time for Rosie's solution (which I think is the best for a sensible outcome) I decided I'd concentrate on the competition stuff and bought myself a little horse to hunt instead.

I had tried everything and apart from letting someone stronger than me take her had decided she just isn't cut out for the fairly orderly hunt we are near.

I'd tried Myler combinations, every gag going and even a double. Got told off too many times for being unable to stop til she got right to the front. Think she wants to be a master's horse.
 
I like the Neue Schule Nelson Waterford Gag. Waterford mouthpiece makes it harder for them to take a hold and lean, the Nelson fulmer things give a little help steering, and with rope cheek pieces it's very repsonsive to give and take.

Has worked for my rather strong 'but I WANT to gallop full speed down the steep steps into the water complex Mum!' horse.......!
 
I agree with kerilli, try a Myler combi. The little cob I ride has started to get strong with her novice owner and I'm trying to find her a bit. I also want to persuade siad owner to let me take Kit hunting, so need to find a bit for that. I went up onto our local "gallops" (huge field!) yesterday in a borrowed Myler short shank combi with the triple barrel mullen mouth, and she was SO soft in it. She did bounce and try to bolt once, but the slightest tweak had her right back where I wanted her. It's too strong in my case for general hacking, but I'd happily hunt in it.
 
I have just put my tank in an american gag with a kineton noseband,and i think!! we have a bit more breaks than we did have!
 
Agree completely with Cheltenham gag, but with two reins. Ride on the snaffle rein, unless you can't stop and then pick up the gag rein. Instant brakes. Stopped my very powerful baby cob when he spotted a cycle race approaching and bolted! But was also able to hunt and Xc him in it without putting him off jumping by being too harsh - he even won a WH champ in it.

This won't work, I ride mine in one as it is milder than a normal Dutch Gag on the big top ring, but a little bit stronger than a snaffle.

Try a Myler with a big port. Also a Ported Pelham.
