Taking my new boy to a local showing show on monday, never been the hugest fan of showing but I've been told he'd do good a working hunter. But am I allowed to ride him in his phelam or should I use his snaffle?

The show is up on the moors (so extra breaks might help!), he was always ridden in a phelam by his old owners and I know it isn't really a schooloing bit but he loves it and works a lot better in it. Thinking of doing working hunter, ridden hunter maybe best combo.

O and I know your ment to wear ties for showing so can I borrow one of my Dad? was thinking of just borrowing a red or blue one? or should I just wear my stock?

all advice appeciated :D

Thanks for the replys (: I haven't ridden in double reins for years and really can't remeber how to ride in them, I always use the leather attachments so I can use one reins should i attempt riding in double or what...? And realised the red tie had yellow spots all over it, is that still better than my stock?
Showing confuses me!

AFAIK you need to take the roundings off your pelham.
Your snaffle rein goes underneath the curb rein (they cross over) as the ring finger is stronger than the index finger.
If you can't ride in the double reins, I would use a snaffle tbh.

A spotted tie should be fine.
good luck :D

Take the pelham roundings off and put on a second set of reins. You also do not need to have them crossed over - I hate seeing them crossed! But that is personal preferance. Ride your horse off of the snaffle rein, you shouldn't need to touch your curb rein so this can be a little slack.

Defo wear the tie, colour doesn't matter and it may make the judge remember you more for the brighter colour of tie rather than a dull boring one.

Good Luck and have fun!

It is correct to show with 2 reins but you SHOULD cross them. This is correct and not crossing them is simply -wrong. In the show ring it may count against you. If you can't cope with double reins use the snaffle. Tie every time. No stocks in the show ring!

Crossing or not crossing double reins is totally down to who is riding. There is no right nor wrong way about it, it is personal preferance. I ride all of mine off of the snaffle rein as you would hold a single rein, the curb rein sits under my pinky finger and is generally a little slack. I do tend to find that people hold onto their curb rein more when they are crossed and thus force their horses heads down but that may just be the eejits I see at shows round here.
