I part loan a strong new forest pony. He is very fast and strong and sometimes he bolts. Also when he canters he puts his head down. I would say he has a fairly hard mouth. Any ideas on bits which could help? I mainly do hacking and a bit of jumping and schooling with him but with schooling he isn't as strong it's hacking in open spaces and jumping. I am a competent rider and have dealt with stong ponies before but I'm only 14 so I'm not experienced with different bits and with 'how to use my hands' etc (hopefully I'm making a bit of sense). The pony isn't nasty he is just full of beans and very keen!

As he's already got a hard mouth, I don't think continually bitting him up until he's completely dead in the mouth is a good idea.

Keep your heals right down and your shoulders back; don't let him pull you forwards and don't pull on both reins at the same time - this is his pulling power. Taking a gentle tug on one is far more effective than hauling back on both.

What bit is he in at the moment? Have you tried bridging your reins out hacking so he can't get his head between his legs?

It could be worth trying bitless.
