OK where do I start

Right as you all know Donnegan was put to sleep on Tuesday (sorry if I go on

) He and Bellaboo's mare were inseparable for the last 3 years so as you can imagine she is not her normal self

D was sedated and I had to take him to the back of the barn to be PTS by injection. We went round afterwards to see him, there was blood on the floor from his nose

Anyone know why? I guess that's normal?
We covered it up with bedding but Lizzie (Bellaboo's mare) is drawn to this spot and stands for ages searching through it and licking it
confused.gif
No other horse is bothered by this spot, is it because they were so close?
Why does she lick it? Should we let her until she is no longer interested?
Sorry for all the questions but just wanted to understand it all a bit more

unfortunatly the blood is all to common..

as for lizzie....i dont know...its kinda sweet though..like she is saying her own goodbyes.

It wasn't too bad just for some reason didn't think there would be any blood. I'm glad I saw him afterwards he looked so peaceful.

Lizzie has a content look on her face whilst she is there and this evening she really didn't want to leave it

i have to admit when we had to have a dartmoor put down..(we winter them on rame head and muppet snapped all the suspensory ligaments) she was put down by the local gamekeeper and then picked up the following day by the owners..(something wierd about dartmoors who are in the breeding scheme) we kept her in the bucket of the digger suspended in the air so noone could get to her..however all the horses wanted to go out of the yard and stare at the digger...

weird

Sorry to hear about Donnegan.
Im not sure why your mare wants to lick the area but a friend told me when a horse was pts on her yard in the field, the day after when the other horses were put out one of the mares went to the exact spot and was pawing and rearing. She knew.

Thankyou
I think she knows and after spending time where he was PTS she is alot calmer.

I had two elderly ponies PTS by the vet over Christmas and I stayed with them, so I can say that it was really peaceful. The sedative keeps them completely calm, they get a local anaesthetic and can't feel the injection - don't worry at all about the blood, he would not have felt a thing and he would not have been stressed out.

Hang in there!

D was quite opinionated to say the least

and I think he knew what was happening and he wanted to go

He'd had a lovely morning and even on Bute he was uncomfortable so I think it was his time.
Still miss the stroppy bu**er like mad though

I had one pts by injection that had been kicked in the field and had a broken leg. The other mare I had was put in the stable while the vet administered the jab and the digger driver had been.
The mare knew exactly where she had been buried and spent days just stood at the side of the grave. She would never tread on it though which I find really weird. I do think they know.
It will seem really raw and painful at the moment for you but it will get a bit better in time. You will never forget it but things will improve.
