Hello everyone, we are looking for some advice for a bit to try on my daughters new cob. He is 14.3 cob with a strong neck and a will to match at times. Cheeky but never nasty or rude. We have had him 6 months. He is ridden solely by my 12 year old as I am too much a a scaredy-cat to get on these days. My daughter is very able and quite brave, not too worried about a buck or two and some stubbornness / speed provided is in control. Her horse is smashing in the arena and behaves really well. He was used a lot for dressage previously. He Can get a little strong jumping in the arena but nothing I worry about. He is in a hanging cheek snaffle with a flash (occasionally) but would also feel happy in a loose ring in an arena.

However out in the open if excited he gets very strong and sticks his head up and can lean on his bit quite heavily. My daughters arms are ready to drop off trying to hold him. He wouldn’t tank off we don’t think but is a handful and not too enjoyable holding onto him for an hours hack or cross country. He gets worse as he warms up and gets tired ??‍♀️ - So we are looking for bit advice so that she has the brakes and control without ending up in a tug of war with him. We are newish to all the own tack / own pony as usually we rode other peoples ponies for them so all tack issues were generally sorted by the owners.

my view is a stronger bit is ultimately gentler as less pulling involved but daughter doesn’t want him in anything too ‘harsh’

He schools regularly and we do lots of transitions and poles. He is a star it’s just when that cob excitement strikes she just doesn’t have the upper body strength yet to keep him in check. Any advice gratefully received thank you ? - we have a Halloween fun ride next week ?

I use a tom thumb on my strong welsh cob, ended up with it by trial and error really as he hated the lifting in the mouth with the universal, a pelham was better but not ideal as he is happier in a lozenge mouthpeice - which I can have in the TT. Pelham/Kimblewick, universal, elevator and tom thumb might be good options.

Thank you for the great advice. We are still getting to know him so going to be a ‘bit of trial and error’ I think. We trialled a Neue Schule loose ring lozenge borrowed from a friend. He seemed to really like the thinner NS style but still not quite enough control for fun rides. So may try the NS Pelham (expensive) but worth it if he is happy in it. And have heard lots of people rate the kimblewick although never tried him in a solid bit. He does like to play with his bit but that is also potentially the problem when he gets excited ?

Thank you all for the great advice. We will try get a bit consultant to visit as it will also increase our awareness and knowledge. That way we know the bit is suitable for him. I think I have a much better idea of what we are looking for xx
