I really need help with finding a bit for my mare, ive tried loads but keep having control problems! She was originally rode in a cherry roller snaffle by the chap that jumped her for me, she went fine in it no problems but because am a very tiny lass lol i cant manage her in it! I tried a rubber pelham which she went fine in but tended to lean on it quite a bit, so i changed to the Jumper bit by Neue Schule But had no control in it and it ended up cutting her mouth. Next I was told to try a waterford dutch gag she went so so in it but was always worried that it would cut her mouth again as its so sensitive so tried a three ring gag with a french link, she went amazing in this and i felt i had enough control until my instructor jumped at a show at the weekend, she was fine in the collecting ring but once in the show ring my instructor had absolutely no control and couldnt hold her, so my mare has ended up with a cut mouth again. My instructor then lent me her wilkie snaffle with a lozange which seems ok buts shes still pulling and making her mouth sore! Please help and stuck on what to put her in, im tempted to go back to a pelham as I put in a lot of flat work the past month and dont have the leaning problem anymore.

Sorry for the long post!!

Bitless may be the way to go, especially with her sensitive mouth. I find out of all the 'bits' I've tried, a hackamore gives me the best brakes with the lightest of touch. Do a google search on bit hire, you should be able to find a company to help.

I tried her in an english hackamore was alrite but she just lent into it and was really heavy on my hands, mite try a german one though....

sounds like she needs alot of schooling on the flat maybe to taech her not to rely on u to carry her and to carry herself?

I have exactly the same problem as you, Toto's huge and I'm tiny! He used to lean too. We were told to stay away from pelhams, they have poll pressure which makes them lean more. He's now in a Cheltenham Gag for xc which works brilliantly. I'd go to a bit bank and get help, we went to Bit World.

although saying that, Toto only leans when we go XC so a Cheltenham gag may not be good for you.. I'd def go to a bit bank and ask for some help, they let you hire bits too so if you don't get along with one you can take it back

a waterford with proper sides (fat rolled smooth pieces where the horse's lips are) and not a cheap one with the bobbles going right to the edges of the bit, will work. it's hard to explain, a bitting expert showed me the difference, and once it had been pointed out, i could see it.
sorry she's cutting her mouth. maybe try a hackamore for a while... they can work wonders.
