i ride a 7y/o pony who has been in a french link loose ring snaffle since he was broken, however, he can be strong out hacking and im worried that because i have to do a fair bit of pulling and 'fighting' to keep him steady that his mouth will become hard, i dont want this to happen and so im looking for reccomendations of bits that could give me a quicker response and more control without being too 'harsh' as he is young.

I found I got more control with a single link snaffle. Not sure if this is normal though as it was only that horse I didn't ride in a french link.

single jointed bits are a little stronger than a french link bit. A fulmer snaffle can help too because if you bring your hands closer together to give the rein aid there is a slight squeezing action from the cheeks. Kimblewicks are a good choice for a little extra control too, without being overly harsh.
