bit/mouth injury

Hi guys,

Yesterday i picked up my new loan horse ( in the dark ) went to ride him today and found this

the owner said she knew about it but thought it had healed. in any case i hibiscrubbed it and applied some wound cream - any ideas on how to get it to heal quicker? would like to get cracking on with this chap and riding with a bit is obviously out of the question

Ay tips/tricks welcome - also would bit guards stop this happening again?

Poor boy! That looks very sore. I'd leave that alone, let the air at it and give it as long as it takes. You could ride in a hackamore or similar bitless bridle meantime.
Sealtex latex bandage cut into strips and wrapped around the areas of the bit that are causing it to pinch may help prevent future bit lesions. Or try a different bit once it's fully healed.
 
Poor thing - he looks like he has been ragged :( I'd document it fully so there can be no comeback on you

Fortunately mouths heal quickly...

Looks like his move to yours was a good thing!
 
Thanks yes i am looking to get my hands on a hackamore for the moment but he does need lungeing to build up his muscles - not sure if i can use a pessoa with a cavesson though.

Ive let the owner know and sent her a pic and she knew anyway - to be fair hes only just come back off his previous loan home so it may have happened then. not sure.
 
My horse had similar injury to both sides of his mouth. The only solution was to ride in a Hackamore which, surprising enough, was brilliant - I even had my dressage lessons with Richard Davison using it! It does take a long time to heal as any slight movement will open up the wound so the hackamore was the only answer. Before the hackamore I tried bit guards and all sorts but nothing worked. I woundn't use hibiscrub on it either as this is quite a powerful solution and could irritate it. I wouldn't use any creams either as you need to get the area dry in order for the healing to take place. Wish you well, good luck.
 
Oh deary me poor guy! Sudocreme is also really good for cuts etc. luckily theouth tends to heal fairly quickly but I wouldn't rush into riding him too quickly. Hope he's better soon :)
 
My horse had a similar injury to both sides of his mouth years ago - we'd gone on a 5 day riding holiday together with the riding club and where we'd gone for out for hours and hours, his mouth must have got a bit dry / chaffed from wearing a bridle all day. We got back on the thurs and went XC on the Sunday, he got strong and his mouth split both sides : ( I felt awful! Anyway I got an English hackamore and the mouth heeled pretty quickly but we still use the hackamore occasionally as we get on really well in it. Steering wasn't entirely precise initially but we soon got the hang of it.
 
Yep looks like he's been ragged in the mouth a bit too much. :( I'd gob it up with sudocream (excuse the pun!). This could be due to the rider been too handy or the horse been too strong for the rider. It usually takes about a week to clear up. It will give you time to bond with him and for him to settle in to his new home. you can always put a bit of vasoline in the corners of his mouth to stop it from happening in the future.
 
Squirt salty water from a syringe on to it, it heals like sea salt and also makes the skin a bit tougher there, then apply sudocream or vaseline but it will heal within a week enough to be ridden but unless you have very light hands he is going to feel it, so might be worth waiting a bit longer, lunge or go bitless.

I experienced exactly the same when my first pony arrived, it broke my heart to see :( Sudocreme is what I reccomend a daily or twice daily application will speed the healing up. Previous owner should be horse whipped! :( poor wee thing, thank god you've got him.
