Bit mouthpiece thickness

Have been eyeballing the NS Veribend but it only comes in 12mm and 16mm thickness. He is currently in a french link full cheek so quite a thin mouthpiece but do you think the 12mm would be too thin? Is 16mm too thick lol? I can't decide!
 
Depends on how much room in your horses mouth, some horses have less room for a bit due to thickness of tongue etc, some have more room. My horse altho a big chap has to have a thin bit, he just cant take a thick bit.
 
That's what I always thought, but I was under the impression that current thinking (I'm sure it'll change again lol) is that horse's mouths are much smaller than previously thought so actually a thinner mouthpiece was kinder as it fits the mouth better?

If you pull his lips apart have a look at the bars of the mouth and the way the tongue is sat

If the tongue is actually poking out through the gap with no space at all the 12mm is probably going to be the best fit

Mylers are 12mm and the reason why NS and ourselves have made the tongue friendly style of bits in this diameter is that those seeking tongue relief often lack space.

However if there is plenty of space then a thicker bit does spread the pressure over a wider area so aren't quite so sharp.
