) Anyway so we are off to vets next Tuesday to be x-rayed and then hopefully taken out.

Now the questions, dentist says that he really needs about 3 weeks with no bit in his mouth and as he is a horse that needs to be ridden we will probs ahve to put some sort of hackmore/bitless bridle in but I dont really understand about them and where to get them from sort thing so any help much appreciated

Thanks

Hmmm....why would you need to go to the expense and effort of taking a horse in to be X rayed for wolf teeth?

Are they impacted or something?

I always thought it was as simple as having vet pop out and just pull them under sedation . From what I gather they come out quite easy if there are no underlying problems.

I never had any instruction as far as a three week healing either. I have been lead to believe they heal rather quickly and I would think just a few days would be enough.
again, if there are no further probelms.

Not a big help with Bitless bridles for you...here on the ghetto ranch we call a halter/headcollar with a lead attached on each side a bitlesss bridle

Presume you have problems with the wolf teeth - last set we had out, horse had no xrays and was only off for a week - and they were enormous!

Vet when giving Chancer his yearly MOT pulled one of his wolf teeth out with his fingers - it was very wobbly so I was lucky or do they have milk versions as he is loosing his milk teeth at the moment as he is only just 3?

I've had two horses wolf teeth taken out. One one mare it was only a case of pulling them out after a jab of local, whilst my other mare had to have x-rays, full GA and surgery because they hadn't erupted and lay just under the bit!! Normally isn't a huge job though! Did they say why they wanted x-rays?

Those would be baby teeth.
OP, cant understand the Xrays. Have only known 1 horse be Xrayed for this, and that was only because it was a tiny fragment left in that wasnt visible to the outside.
vets will sedate and do them at home (its a 2 min job), some dentists will wop them out without sedation for around a fiver (so a lot cheaper than x rays).
Generally the smaller they are, the more trouble they are. When they are bigger they can be more of a nuissance if they are angled in and forwards.
3 weeks is excessive, I usually give 1 dayu and then a rubber bit, or ride them in a hackamore for a week.
One of my dads horses had his out a few weeks ago. Wires got crossed in the yard and he was ridden out as normal. No one noticed any difference to him.

Ahh I didnt make myself clear, the horses wolfteeth havnt actually come through the skin yet, he called them "blind wolfteeth" or something

but as we have a lot coming up and they are causing him pain when being ridden so turning him into a bit of a pain sometimes, dentist thought we should get them out now. The vets said the X-ray was to make sure they were all out.

As for having 3 weeks with no bit, im guessing so long because he has to be diggen a bit deeper into or something and it helps them heal up faster if they havnt got a bit against the sore place

Sorry for ramblings, I dont even understand myself

Hi

X rays are essential prior to extraction of blind wolf teeth and sometimes normal wolf teeth. As they are blind the EDT needs to know the angle at which they are errupting and the rotts length otherwise they can be fractured a pieces left in without anyone knowing and they horse will be in a lot of pain. As routine blind wolf teeth always removed.

well I can understand in blind wolf teeth but not in normal ones. Would a vet not be experienced enough to know fro observation if the whole tooth was out or not? I would hope so

Seems such an expense and hassle for some wolf teeth.

when you say "sometimes in normal" I assume you mean and odd circumstance where there is doubt that the whole tooth came out. In that case I suppose the Xray would happen after the fact and not "prior to"

If it was demed needed to happen "prior to" I doubt they would be "normal" wolf teeth

But hey, what do I know?

If I am mistaken please explain

Dont worry it is perfectly understandable. In most cases they can be taken out without x rays but some WT can be as wide as your little finger and can erupt through on an angle. Now if this tooth is elevated on the presumption that it is not on angle it can easily fracture.

I have known a vet try to remove canines thinking they are wolf teeth!
