has anyones horse had a reaction to a peritineal (sp?) tap? or has their horse had one and where needle inserted became infected?

Only asking as mine had a peritineal tap begining Dec when he went to Newmarket for colic. Came home and all was fine. a week after his return I noticed his stomach swelling and then a week later where needle injected infection started to come out. que a weeks oral antibiotics and 3 penicillan Injection plus 10 days bute, This I initially cleared it up (or so I thought) last monday lots of pus....again so onto penicillan Injections again (last was given tonight) and 10 days bute....thing is when I cleaned it tonight it was still producing Pus

Thats what it was looking like.....the main odema has gone down and just the bit where it has been shaved is swollen

I dont like the sound of this. Maybe you need further investigations to see exactly where the infection is coming from and to find out exactly what type of infection it is as it may need a different antibiotic. Have you spoken to the Newmarket vets or has your own vet done so? If not, may be a good idea to do so.

have spoken to Newmarket vets as soon as i noticed...they said to keep an eye and assured me it was a very rare thing to happen as as far as they were aware its never happened before....even asked if i was sure it was from the same site the needle would have entered. They said if i was concerned to call my vet. They rang my vets to air my concerns as did I to get my vet out!

I think it may be an idea to get a second opinion perhaps?

My horse had a buldge under his belly like this when he had punctured his side and required an operation. The swelling gathered at the lowest point, underneath his belly. This is a photo the day after his operation.

Over the weeks the fluid bag became larger. The vet was going to put a drain in it, but nature took over before the vet could get let loose on the scalpel, Sammi's body made his own drain!

Do you think it could possible be a fluid build up in combination with an infection? Hope you get to the bottom of the problem soon, it must be dreadfully worrying. Take care and healing vibes to your horse xx

Quite possibly. At the minute the pus is draining on its own slowly, if i push it more will come out and if I bath it with hot salty water it will encourage it to drain more but still there is just a little hole where the needle inserted and from what i can see this is the only place it is coming from,

When Sammi's natural drain appeared the vet scratched off the thin layer of skin covering it, and the puss gushed out following alot of liquid type fluid (que me gasping and borking)

He told me to everyday keep the drain open and massage the fluid and puss out.

I would definitely have them out again saying you want answers/solutions, and failing that, I would get an independant vet from another practise to cast an eye and see what they think. Good Luck xx

I have been massage the pus and fluid out each day and some days i thought it had almost cleared but always came back worse the day after. Will be getting my vet back as in a day or so I think. How long after finishing antibiotics do you think i should give it? Should it have cleared by now?

As far as I have ever experienced, any infection should have totally cleared BEFORE the full course of anti-biotics come to an end. Whenever an infection has continued, I have always been given a further course to use, if not a more powerful one. Although I appreciate this is exactly what you have had to do. There's something more to this then what meets the eye!! It makes you wonder if something has got lodged up in the hole causing the infection to constantly reoccur?

I have wondered. He has now had 3 courses and this last one has been injections 3 days apart! Was concerned when the first batch didnt get it. Thing is the main odema has gone now but like i have said the lump of injection site is still there. Very sore (more so that before I would have said) I do wonder though if I take him off the bute and antibiotics would it all come back up again?! Either was think the vetill be out again!

In himself he is ok, eating and drinking normally (possibly drinking a tad more than usual but have put this down to more hay he has had what with the snow) Only thing I have noticed is that his poo's are very loose but again that could be linked to the water he is consuming!

Wounds don't heal if a foreign body is inside. The infection is the body's defences working and you need to know why they aren't winning. There has got to be something still in there. I'd be getting a vet out and they'll maybe flush the wound under sedation. That's what happened to my horse whose tiny weeny wound wouldn't heal. Two lots of AB's and recurring swelling followed by a classic abscess. Vet came and washed the tract out (it was quite extensive) gave him yet more AB's and that was the end of it.

I really think it needs looking at sooner rather than later!

I just wonder 'what' could be in there. Only a needle was inseted and it was done in a sterile environment. The needle site had healed before it made itself a drain and all seemed fine (no swelling, pain nothing) When the Vet originally came he said he could try and make a drain but didnt think it would make any difference as its not a gushing leak and just a drip but does get faster when hot fermentations applied!

may not be related but my horse had a swelling exactly like this under his stomach,he was given bute which he had an extremely rare raction to which caused him to start losing protein as it aggrivated and inflamed in his gut.he had a high temperature at one point and had mild colic also.he went to leahurst and was prescribed steroids and was put on a high protein diet.his droppings are still loose after 10 weeks due to the inflammation in his gut but does seem to be getting better every day slowly.his protein levels are nearly back to normal now after being so low they were unreadable.hope you get to the bottom of the problemxxx
