Got to the yard at 8 to feed my boy and friends boy.
They currently have day beds down as they're living out ATM (no banks just a layer of straw up to rubber matting)
friends horse is notorious for loving a lay down.
Put dinners in and pottered off for 5mins, came back and friends horse was laying down having only eaten half of his dinner. They're on a new field so have been stuffing grass all day.
However, friends horse, once he saw me looking , got back up and finished his dinner, then proceeded to lay back down.
Since 8 he's got up and down about 5 times. He's showing no colicky signs and generally looks fine in himself.
He was also lunged fairly hard today.
Could it be the combination of yummy grass and being worked have tired him out? They've been out all summer and he genuinely loves coming in for an afternoon nap (which he hasn't had today)
ive phoned friend who says she "trusts my judgement" (which makes me feel very responsible) although I'm not worried enough to call a vet.
I'm going to stick around till 10 then put him out.

Any thoughts or suggestions that could make me feel better?
It's not totally abnormal for him to be laying down, it's just the up and down that's got me. Especially half way through dinner :/

Getting up and down is showing signs of being colicky, has he passed any droppings in that time or had a pee? are his gut sounds normal, listen to both sides you should hear gurgling, I would be thinking of calling the vet if he was mine, better a wasted call than risking a serious colic happening overnight.

what a difficult one for you. If you are in any doubt I would say to your friend that she needs to come and have a look at him herself.

If he's known for lying down and has passed droppings and eaten then I wouldn't worry. Normally I guess you wouldn't be watching him and wouldn't have any idea how much he gets up and down.

Yes , other than the up and down I mean. Sorry :) he's only getting up when something 'interesting' happens. Ie, my boy walked past his stable to go out , or I look over the door at him laying down. Going to walk him around for a bit now until he poos again

Only colicy signs my little boy was showing was getting up and down, and slightly fast breathing, He was bleeding internally, don't mess around with any colic signs, call the vet

This is how I feel bonny. Is it just that I'm sitting outside his stable watching? I know the horse very well so I think you generally know when something's up. I just don't want to be wrong as he's not mine ! It's always different when its someone else's horse

I would get your friend to come and have a look or at least call her. I would want to know if it was my horse I think. You are sensing something is wrong otherwise you wouldn't be watching him and posting on here about it....put it to your friend and she what she thinks but to my mind stopping eating and getting up and down could be signs of a colic - sorry, don't want to scare you...(((hugs)))

As posted above have you checked for signs of laminitis?

I'd ring you friend and get her to come and check the horse out, hope he's ok and it turns out to be nothing.

How is the horse today? :)

Bright as a button this morning!
I checked his digital pulses last night. they were pretty hard to find and not throbbing.
I stayed until about half 10 after walking him until he pooed, turned him out and left.

I think i was being over cautious. But alls well that ends well :)
ps. thank you for all the advice everyone :)
